An Obama appointee. Thank you President Obama and Judge Forrest.
"A federal judge on Monday compared the behavior of immigration agents to ‘treatment we associate with regimes we revile as unjust’…”
What a coincidence; most Americans revile the Trump regime as unjust.
It’s just amazing that a judge sitting on a little island between the Hudson and East Rivers could issue an order like that.
Some, I’m sure, are good people, but as an organization ICE is rotten from root to leaf. It seems that it attracts few individuals who a democracy can trust with its powers. I’m not sure how to fix that, but I’m not real keen on the state or direction of our private little Homeland Security paramilitary fiefdom.
It’s a sad day when a man can’t direct an uncaring, brutal autocracy without interference from the courts. What ever happened to original intent?

Nacht und Nebel.
ICE Einsatzgruppen.
Eliot Cohen had a good piece in The Atlantic today about how the majority of Americans have stood firm and said no, we don’t want to be the kind of country Trump and his thugs would make us into. We’re not that corrupt and we’re not that cruel. We’re not perfect, God knows. But we’re better than Trump, most of us.
Thank you. Great piece. I sure needed that.
“We are not that country;"
Judge Forrest may have to adjust her political theory to accommodate a growing body of contradictory evidence.
It’s really uplifting. This judge has read common decency into the Constitution.
You keep using that word.
I hope you are right!
(This is not the Eliot Cohen who’s a war criminal, but a different one?)
We are all members of a common society. Asserting you are not but one small part of the whole isn’t an option. If nothing else mere physical placement includes you in the group, you have no choice in the matter, nor in inclusion.

1.
the aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community.
Feeling dirty and tainted and obscene for your small, albeit involuntary, part in this society serves as motivation for corrective action.
Absolutely!!!
Just agreeing with the author. Country boy myself, live in a small town of mostly-better-than-Trumps. It’s necessarily anecdotal and all.
But you were not describing the state of being a society. You are saying we’re all holding the torch. Fuck that.
And that makes everyone as bad as the worst? Uh huh sure whatever.
