Discussion: Judge Orders Do-Over After Texas Misleads Voters On Voter ID Law

This affidavit business still lets the state require some form of identification. By having people sign something because they don’t have the original types of ID that the state required, the judge seems to be affirming the state’s right to require a photo ID in the first place. Before all this came about, one did not have to show ID to vote. Your voter card was all you needed. It was matched up against the official voter list, and you were good to vote. Requiring the ID in the first place is the problem.

Once again we find it is the GOP-run legislatures who commit actual voter fraud.

There is a special place in hell for politicians who intentionally defy court orders in order to commit voter fraud.
But for the time being, I’d be satisfied with jail.

We here in MO will have another opportunity to vote on photo ID amendment to our constitution. We voted on this on before, it passed, and then was struck down by state supreme court. The thing that annoys me the most in our case is that MO DLs and Non driving IDs are not Real ID compliant. The legislature was suppose to fix in the last session but decided to work on permitless conceal carry, expanding the Castle doctrine, defunding PP, writing new regs to harass PP, giving fetuses personhood rights, and limiting the liability for farmer’s livestock getting out and causing a nuisance. So if this passes again, gets by the state supreme court my DL will be good enough to vote but not good enough to enter a federal facility or fly on a plane, because the good old boys in SW MO don’t want to them feds to be able to track us citizens.

I’m good with that if the crime is a felony which would not let them vote.

WTF! Election day may be violent in some states.

So, there you go. . .

Those True the Vote asswipes are based in Texas - Fort Bend County, I think. Harris County’s neighbor to the southwest. I am sure there will be plenty of unofficial poll watchers and plenty of open carry idiots exercising their rights to be stupid. I’m going to vote early (no lines) and make sure to bring my voter registration card and present it first and see if they ask for my driver’s license - geez I’ve lived at the same address for 18 years!

“Oh, the NEW modification order? Hmmm, we hired Bob and Ernie to take care of that, they haven’t done it yet?! Well, someone will straighten this out, for sure! We’ll get back to you when we get to the bottom of it, probably sometime around the middle of November…”

Voting shouldn’t be harder than filing your taxes. You sign your tax documents with info you know to be true and face the penalty of perjury if it isn’t. Goofballs like James O’Keefe should be facing perjury charges when they try to pull this garbage. Voting registration should be as simple as declaring who you are with the penalty of perjury if you’re lying. And I really doubt “non-citizens” that spook Repubs out are going to be lining up to vote.

The compromise language is still BS. The most a voter should ever have to sign is an affidavit certifying that they are a citizen eligible to vote in this election.

Still trying to be clever, eh? Well, you’re being too clever by half, Texas GTOPers. The reactionaries on the Supreme Court really opened a can of worms when they overturned those parts of the Voting Rights Act; I just wish they were the ones who had to clean up their own mess.

One of the big funnels from the population to who gets to vote is the actual registration process itself. A few years back, the Texas Department of Public Safety “mislaid” a whole bunch of registrations that were supposed to come through the driver’s license application, that good old motor voter part of voter registration that republicans hate. A lot of folks showed up at the polls, thinking they were registered. They weren’t, so they were only allowed to cast “provisional” ballots. These ballots are not counted unless the contest is so close that every possible vote must be looked at. It worked out very well for TX GOP in 2014 when the fewest percentage of the population ever turned out to vote.

I just checked my Republican county’s website. They do make it as inscrutable as possible. Here is how they word the ID thing currently.

You must present one of the following forms of photo ID when voting in person:*

(It lists all the old pre DOJ order requirements)

Only after you read through that list do you get to:

Unable to obtain one of these IDs? Fill out a declaration at the polls explaining why and bring one of the following supporting documents:

(It lists all the new forms allowed)

*With the exception of the U.S. citizenship certificate, the identification must be current or have expired no more than 4 years before being presented for voter qualification at the polling place.
Exemptions: Voters with a disability may apply with the county voter registrar for a permanent exemption to showing ID at the polls. Voters with a religious objection to being photographed or voters who do not have a ID due to certain natural disasters may apply for a temporary exemption to showing ID at the polls. Please contact your voter registrar for more details.

Fucking Texas dirtbags.

The Lege enabled it, but it’s the Sec’y of State (Carlos Cascos, appointed by Governor Greg “I got my big insurance settlement, fuck all the rest of you” Abbott.) who is generating the non-compliant materials. It’s a pity both those assholes can’t be found in contempt of court.
