This is why you don’t wait until the last goddamn minute to register, because you never know what will come up and potentially interfere.
A near Category 5 hurricane destroys some of the western Florida panhandle and a Federal Judge says, “No justification?”
The judge also said if voters weren’t pre-occupied playing drinking games like boofing and devil’s triangle at a hurricane party they would have had time to register.
The judge could have issued an order that applied only to those parts of the state that were affected by the hurricane. But, no.
Democrats should just use reverse psychology at this point. Insist on no time extensions, lure the partisan hack on the bench to rule against them in accordance with the Fuck You Libtard Act, get the time extension.
What?
Jesus Judge - have you seen the panhandle? It looks like it was nuked. And why the fuck does an extension have to be justified? Goddamn if the people want one the people ought to be able to get one - end of story.
This shit has to stop.
Is the judge a Republican? There you go. You can’t trust these traitors no matter what.
Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court has not only emboldened misogynists, he has freed the racist conservative (republican) judges to make openly racist, conservative rulings. They know that SCOTUS will now uphold even their worst rulings.
Isn’t the panhandle area more republican? I’m in CA, so admittedly I know nothing about nor have I ever been to Florida (why?). I’ve just always heard that western Florida is more republican, especially the panhandle area.
That is a very good point. Once you’ve turned SCOTUS into the Trump Court, a cascade effect happens. The signal goes out to fully mobilize the judicial wing of the GOP.
So what are they going to do for the parts of the state that simply aren’t open even a month after a major disaster? If you’re relocated somewhere else for the duration, where do you vote? Do you need absentee ballots? And how equitablly are these kinds of things going to be distributed?
Of course. In reality, who the hell does that?
Procrastination is a solid human fact, and why retail outlets make most of their annual profits on the day or two before Christmas.
Throw in the devastation at Mexico Beach, power outages across the state, 10-100 thousands displaced, and it is ridiculous that FLA can’t extend registration by a mere 7 days.
Geeez, they’re down to scraping their fingers to a nub climbing this mountain.
This is what sends me over the edge:
Schumer.
Elections have consequences.
It doesn’t help that Leahy kept the positions open during the Obama administration, until a Republican President could come in and fill them. I hope he’s on McConnell’s Christmas card list, he’s earned that much.
No Russians required…
The problem with that solution is that the Supreme Court used a past ruling on elections that only applied to some counties in Florida, and not to ALL or them, to claim unequal treatment of the voters, and, having closed that door to the recount, anointed G W Bush as the new Emperor of the USA.
It’s all the counties or none of them.
On a partisan upside, much of this area is relatively sparsely populated 9and I said relatively, dammit, this aint Miami-Dade or Tampa-St.Pete) and as I recall, votes pretty red.
That said, I agree with my departed PoliSci-prof dad: “The more people that vote, the more representative the government is, which means more Democrats.”
Do you have a link? I’d be curious to read about that.
I’m also not from Florida, but that was my understanding.
That said the democratic nominee is the mayor of Tallahassee which is in the panhandle, so this digs partly at his power base (hence the decision as I presume this judge was nominated by a Republican)
