Discussion: Judge: New Mexico Cops Ordered To Stand Trial For Killing Of Homeless Man

Discussion for article #239530

If memory serves nearly all of the cops who have been charged were caught on video. This case is no exception.

So let me get this straight:

A heavily armed policeman- wearing Kevlar and restraining a 110 lbs. trained attack animal- stands up in front a judge and grand jury, and claims he was ā€œhelplessā€ against the ā€˜possible’ attack of a schizophrenic man several yards away. Which then required a hail of bullets to subdue the unarmed man who had not attacked them in the previous four hours of the standoff.

Do I have this right?

I guess then we have finally answered the question of 'what is the legal definition of a candy-ass’. Take this boy’s toys away, he doesn’t know what to do with them.

Excellent…This should sweep the Nation…but ALBBQ is a hotbed of racists and crazies , so the jury poll will be an issue…

Just can’t seem to shake the suspicion that there’s some sort of contest or competition, or coordinated something, among certain elements of law enforcement, to "ā€œput a notch on their gunā€ before the public finally wakes up and starts demanding law enforcement be held to a higher standard than the general public, instead of a lower one.

How many in this current crop of steroid-fueled, prejudice-laden cops have agreed quietly int their squad cars and K9 wagons to help each other get ā€œtheir killā€?

Call me paranoid, but there is something at work here that descends to depths that can only be labeled ā€œevilā€, in the most fundamental definition.

Maybe it is ā€œjustā€ a common, primal spiritual influence, and not any sort of spoken creed, but it just seems to me there’s been way too many of these kinds of unnecessary shootings, it is as if the killers in uniform are compelled to kill someone they deem worthless to their version of society as part of a rite of passage.

If they got a bonus for live capture, but lost some pay every time they shoot someone, regardless of the outcome, they might reconsider bloodshed… sounds terrible, I know, but sometimes incentives like money can change intentions at the most fundamental moments.

Too bad the people we are talking about are that cheap about life itself, but you work with the tools you are given…

The police department released the video of the shooting under the assumption that it exonerated the officers. (Since Boyd had a knife I assume.) In some ways that makes the whole video even more frightening.

The victim was surrounded by guns, he tried to surrender, they released a dog to attack him. Instead of waiting to be viciously devoured, he (like any normal person would) tried to defend himself and pulled out a knife. As soon as the blade came out they shot him.

They deliberately escalated the situation in what looked like an excuse to kill him. And their superiors thought that was so clearly justified, they were shocked that the video was seen as excessive force.
