Discussion: Judge Blocks Trump Policy Of Returning Asylum Seekers To Mexico

  1. I was simply stating an answer to the question. Impeachment proceedings would open up some investigative doors.

  2. Since you mention it, NOW would be a good time because it has proven necessary. Barr is going to redact everything from the grand jury, which is key to understanding Trump’s malfeasance and self-dealing. Impeachment proceedings would go a long way to getting a court to order those proceedings unsealed.

Trump is making his secretary google to see if Seeborg is a Hispanic last name.

And just following orders didn’t work out well for a number of people at the end of WWII. Need to make some people spend time in prison if they blindly follow the tRumptistas after the next election.

I fail to understand why there are persistent cries for impeachment from people who understand the process: impeach and then convict which won’t happen with R control in the senate. Nor will impeachment be welcomed until more R voters, like it or not, are in agreement, if not, it’ll get ugly fast. “Nullifying the 2016 election!” will be the least of what we’ll hear.

Mexico owes you no “due diligence” whatsoever.

As for your sure knowledge that all these asylum-seekers “are going to be faking asylum,” for now I decline to comment.

SPLC disagrees with “moral and reasonable.”

“Today’s victory is especially important amidst reports that the Trump administration is planning to move toward even more extreme immigration policies,” said Melissa Crow, senior supervising attorney of the Southern Poverty Law Center. “The decision will prevent incredibly vulnerable individuals from being trapped in dangerous conditions in Mexico.”

There are 4 principal values of impeachment, even in a situation where conviction is not likely:

  1. Opens up several cases for Prosecution. An impeachment inquiry would involve a Congress with wide subpoena powers that could gather evidence and testimony from everyone. That very process would not only educate and inform the public, it would also lead to multiple criminal referrals and imprisonment for Trump cronies. People ranging from Erik Prince to Kirstjen Nielsen would go to jail in a full on, Watergate style inquiry. In addition, the uncovering of the multiple crimes of Trump, the Trump family and their businesses could also be referred for prosecution. All of that has real value.

  2. Reaffirm Separation of Powers and the Rule of Law. If a POTUS can get away with flouting the law with the only remedy being voting him out, then we have an elected dictatorship, not a true Republic. Impeaching him for instructing border officials to break the law and lie to judges is the least that we can do to make a statement that Presidents can’t get away with everything and anything.

  3. Political Juice for Dems Heading into 2020. Just as the GOP gained a lot of juice from impeaching Clinton after the 98 mid terms to frame and win the 2000 election, so also the Dems would stand to politically benefit from impeaching Trump. We will show that we’re a party that stands for something and backs it up. Going into the 2020 election, I would much rather be the Dems who did everything they could to hold Trump accountable than the GOP who will have covered for said crook. The flip side of that is if we don’t impeach b/c we’re too scared to do it (and that is what’s going on here), Trump looks like teflon. He can get away with anything. He is above the American state itself. He is our first dictator and people would be attracted to that kind of power that can be wielded against large institutions and win. People in this country don’t understand the lure of autocrats. If you let them win, people side with power and the winner. This idea that there is no cost to not impeaching Trump is simply naivety on the part of Democrats.

  4. Impeachment Stops Trump from Violating More Laws and Weakening the US. Folks can sit around and try to outthink themselves tactically, but the truth is staring us in the face. An unchecked Trump is going to massacre dozens of migrants now that Stephen Miller is in control. The image that keeps popping into my head is Jalianwallah Bagh, the incident almost 100 years ago when British Imperial troops massacred dozens of Sikh worshippers. It was a galvanizing event for the Indian indepedence/anti-colonial movement. Start impeachment and maybe those atrocities don’t happen. Trump is also hell bent on setting up things for war with Iran. Impeach the motherf***er and maybe it doesn’t happen. Trump has been undermining NATO, spreading nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia, and has let Kim Jong Un roam free with nuclear weapons while the US-Asia alliance is basically shattered. Impeach him and maybe he gets stopped in his tracks.

There are more reasons I can come up with, but these are the ones that popped into my head.

What I find hilarious about Trump’s presidency is while the GOP hates any kind of regulations, after he is gone and the Democrats are in power, his antics will usher in a wave of regulations that they never in the world would want or have intended.
It will be sweet!

A sternly worded complaint from an R not named McConnell

Senator Ron Johnson, Republican of Wisconsin and the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, complained about “congressional dysfunction” in addressing border security, but added, “I am concerned with a growing leadership void within the department tasked with addressing some of the most significant problems facing the nation.”

Yes sir, it is a very good start to the week!

Clearly you’ve given this more thought and done more research than I and I’ll acknowledge that most of what you say is valid. I also have begun to think that none of these situations will apply, his small base will cause an uproar and issue threats to people’s lives, and/or acting on these principles will be extremely time consuming and we’ll have to wait until 2020 to kick him out of office. The Dem nominee must also be ready to tackle the aftermath of this worst kind of disruption to our system of democratic government.

As more Trump judges are on the bench or up for appointment it becomes really crucial to understand how many Trump judges are like him: they believe in results, not the rule of law. Not helpful for the Republic.

Fucking spineless Senate. All they think of is reelection. Never what is right and good for our country. This cannot continue if we want a country any of us recognize.

the story is fairly on-point. i have to raise serious objection to throwing in

"The administration hopes that making asylum seekers wait in Mexico will discourage weak claims and help reduce an immigration court backlog of more than 800,000 cases."

imho, this is parroting the administration’s bullsh*t. this policy is a simple enactment of #45’s and his totally racist adviser steven miller’s desire to keep as many dark-skinned folks from entering the country as they possibly can. the backlog in the courts doesn’t bother them. and they reject strong claims with the same vigor as weak claims. again, imho.

i would like to think that huffpost is less accepting of 45’s baloney than that.

Well written and thorough as usual.
