Discussion: Joni Ernst: Harkin Wouldn't Comment On My Looks If My Name Were 'John'

Discussion for article #229630

Don’t think he was trying to compliment her. He was saying that her ads were trying to portray her as pretty and nice. And she’s not.

And Republicans wouldn’t pay attention to an ugly woman either. What’s her point again?

His point was that looks shouldn’t matter; what should matter to voters is what’s best for the state.
Acknowledging that appearance plays a role in the decision that many voters make is not sexism; it’s acknowledging the presence of a different kind of bias in politics. Just ask John Edwards, whose looks played a big role in the media’s reaction to him, for good or for ill. Perhaps the phrase, “if my name were John,” was poorly chosen, Ms. Ernst?

Ernst said she thought the press “would not have let that go.”

Oh please. There are a lot of comments made by Republicans that the “liberal” media let go. Most of which came out of her mouth.
.
I think Harkin should not have expressed what he did. First because it was dumb being close to the election and second because she would run to FOX (not local media) and play victim. Speaking of which. Republicans play all tough with their guns and threats to shoot but they sure are some chickenshits that get bent all out of shape when someone says something that’s not “PC”.

Joni Ernst: Harkin Wouldn’t Comment On My Looks If My Name Were ‘John’

He didn’t, you lying asshole. He said that people citing your looks as a reason for voting for you were wrong.

Harkin said nothing wrong or even remotely controversial.

“You know, in this Senate race, I’ve been watching some of these ads,” Harkin said, according to video of his remarks. “And there’s sort of this sense that, ‘Well, I hear so much about Joni Ernst. She’s really attractive, and she sounds nice.’”

“Well I gotta to thinking about that," he continued. "I don’t care if she’s as good looking as Taylor Swift or as nice as Mr. Rogers, but if she votes like [Minnesota Rep.] Michele Bachmann, she’s wrong for the state of Iowa.”

But you wouldn’t know that from the “liberal media” like TPM.

Don’t let her near your scrotum.

Yep, I just left the other article. Wish I’d read that one first; I agree - very misleading.

Sure, her fauxtrage is just a red herring but wouldn’t it be cool if her name, were, in fact, John and she were the first transvestite candidate for Congress? That’d open some doors!

Lord knows I’d comment on her looks if her name was John.
I’d say, “That woman named John has Bachmann eyes.”

If the state of Iowa is stupid enough to let this lunatic represent them for the next six years, then I give up.

Ronald Reagan’s stupidity made Dan Quayle possible. Dan Quayle’s stupidity made George W. Bush possible. George W. Bush’s stupidity made Sarah Palin possible. And Sarah Palin’s stupidity has made anything possible – including Ernst.

Under the previous Republican President, we had the worst terrorist attack in American history, a war in Iraq based on a pack of lies, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, eight million jobs lost, the Dow Jones down 5,000 points in 2008, and one-third of the country’s net worth destroyed.

I tend to think that the GOP has inflicted more than enough pain and misery on this country, but apparently Iowa disagrees.

It’s getting really hard to keep fighting for people who happily elect representatives that don’t give a shit about them.

More to the point, how strongly and consistently and effectively has Harkin come out for the Democrat. Only thing I read was that he didn’t contribute any money. Now’s not the time to get all independent minded and stuff.

“I think it’s unfortunate that he and many of their party believe that you can’t be a real woman if you’re conservative and you’re female.”

Didn’t he say just the opposite? And weren’t you the individual who bragged about cutting off testicles, pig lady?

Joni Ernst wouldn’t have a chance if her name was John.

"Ernst said in an appearance on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends.”

That alone disqualifies her to the Reason crowd.

If she was on that show and no doubt got friendly treatment, it is proof she’s on the waning side of history.

I have said many times lately, this election, more than just about any in our stormy political history, represents elements from “the past” holding desperately onto power, and stalling “the future” in the process.

And can anyone, for or against her, deny that she’s wrapped in her flag and carrying her cross?

I don’t care if she’s as good looking as Taylor Swift or as nice as Mr. Rogers

OMG, how horrible…Taylor Swift???
Is every Ernst action about an old boyfriend?
Did Taylor write a song about hog balls?

If Joni/John were paying attention she might have realized that Harkin wasn’t commenting on her looks but rather was commenting on other people commenting on her looks. On the other hand, subtle distinctions like that don’t seem to be part of her make up. That’s why she carries her Smith & Wesson with her everywhere.

In terms of her attractiveness, I have to personally disagree…

but, then, I suppose an old Republican might find her “attractive”, even downright irresistible in her Guard uniform, packin’ heat…

from the party who selected a woman with minimal credentials, bu who was a flirt that the republican male voters could fantasize as winking at them (and many continue to do so)…
