Discussion: Johnson: I 'Confirmed' McConnell Double-Speak On Obamacare Repeal

Who finds these pictures? Does the guy beside him have a fishing rod with an invisible line?

This is incredibly dangerous for McConnell, even aside from the passage of this bill. The caucus I’m sure expects a certain amount of spin on the issues, but outright double dealing like he’s doing with the moderate and conservative wings is a huge, huge no-no. If they can’t rely on his word being good, he won’t last as Majority Leader.

@whiteboar If the repub senators think McConnell is not telling the TRUTH (HORRORS), they should get a new leader. Who could that be? Johnson?

I think the biggest competition in wingnut land is to see how many lines they can cross. And watch Mitch promise Ron, “OK, we’ll cut medicaid by 110% starting 2 years ago,” then watch Ron say, “OK, Mitch promised me PERSONALLY, so all good.”

It’s a big deal. Duping the rubes is one thing, but Senators expect not to be treated as rubes.

“I was strongly in favor of the motion to proceed before I read the comments by Senator McConnell,” he said. “The ‘don’t worry about it, it’s too far in the future, it’ll never happen.’

I doubt this is new behavior on Mitch’s part. I think it’s possible Johnson is publicizing the practice as a way of voting no without pissing off the base.

If I were a moderate, I’d ask, "Since our current political policy when in the minority is to obstruct everything just because… :

“Do you expect us to get our asses beat so profoundly over this and Trump that the Democrats will be in a position to prevent it?”

“Are you really trying to tell me that if the Democrats don’t have filibuster-proof majorities we’re just going to choose not to obstruct?”

“I’m just supposed to take your word for the latter and hope for the former?”

“Do you like insulting my intelligence?”

Wow, that’s beautiful…McConnell makes the bill worse to get people like Johnson onboard, then secretly promises the moderates that in the future the worst effects won’t happen, getting the right wingers pissed off. It explains why we’re not hearing anything from the moderates, who have been promised that it won’t be as bad as it seems…they figure they can pass it and then work in the future to moderate (ha!) it. The reality, of course, is that once the harsh law is in place Republicans won’t do anything to tone it down, but McConnell is lying about that, and keeping it quiet to ensure the bill passes.

Good job to TPM to catch this, hopefully it helps to sink the bill.

I pray for wide publicity of Mitch’s latest shenanigans (and will gleefully watch the resulting GOP infighting).

Too early for champagne? Would hate to celebrate its downfall prematurely…I guess the champagne of beers will have to do, since this is good news and Johnson’s outta the Miller state.

You probably have a point there. Oth, if McConnell is lying (and known to lie) to get his way, he could be lying about the repercussions down the road. "Oh, don’t worry, it’ll never be enacted down the road. " Except now we have no idea if McConnell will keep his word about even that.

Trust issues matter

What does this say about McConnell? I guess it just confirms that he literally does not care in the least for policy. The only thing that matters is destroying the other side, even if it means lying to members of his own caucus.

This is one horrible human being.

‘Johnson … said to his driver “I think we ought to go,”’

“Going” won’t fix the mess Mr. Johnson and his party and its leaders have made.

But at least he recognizes that when you’re up to your nose in the septic tank, opening your mouth to answer a question is not a good idea.

You would think, but we see DT voters blow off obvious lies daily. I’m not sure the senators or house reps are any smarter.

Johnson was against it for lack of death panels essentially, then was for it because incremental death panels lured him in but now may be against it again because the deaths aren’t guaranteed.

This is the virtuous Senator that we are hanging our hats on? I hope not and come on Heller and Sandoval.
