Discussion: John Podesta Reportedly Fell For Russian Phishing Attack Thanks To A Typo

God in Heaven.
Podesta must spend 12 hours a week with calls from Microsoft Support.

I’m not buying this story.

Social engineering and silly mistakes account for the majority of successful hacks/attacks.

Haha, that works too. And frankly based on the email, even if someone told me it was OK, I’d tell them they were nuts. We are talking 1st grade level stuff here. Right, google is going to just send me an email with a link to reset my password…

I know you’re kidding, but I wonder if you inadvertently hit upon something important - you think with all the controversy over deleted emails that the DNC people were afraid to delete anything, even such blatant, obvious phishing scams?

IF IF IF this story is true - could it be the result of more “working the refs”?

I had already heard that. A wave election?

More like a tsunami.

Yes, the typo by the aide was pretty bad, but the email was clearly a scam. In fact, if my aide typed that about the same email, I would think my aide’s email had been hacked a the response was bogus. And as another poster pointed out, if he meant to type illegitimate, why was the word “a” preceding it, not “an”.

And the beauty of it is that Podesta wrote a 2014 report on cyberprivacy for President Obama… You can’t make this stuff up.

You’re right. There were far more people hacked than Podesta. He’s just the most prominent name. It’s a long, highly technical (to me) long story and it’ll be clear there were plenty of government officials who misunderstood how serious it was. Including in the Executive Branch. Podesta was small potatoes as Hyman Roth would say.

You always think you’re the smartest person around.

It’s a disease.

My granddad used to call it “shanks’ mare”. In other words, if it’s important you drag your ass out of the chair and go to the person in person. But this wasn’t important enough to do that.

Sometimes I understand why people I’d like to hear from more have dropped out of the ongoing conversation.

How about you just straight out delete the damn thing? Why does Podesta even need to see it?

Looking at the margin of Trump’s “victory” in several swing states, the numbers siphoned off between Jill Stein and Gary Johnson would easily have gotten Hillary elected. And I’d be willing to bet the farm that a lot of those people jumped over there because they bought in to the whole poisoned atmosphere the Russians created.

And you say, “For Putin and RUSSIANS, product of the hacking was nowhere worth the penalty they’ll pay in the long run.” What penalty? They’ve got a whole regime getting ready to take over this country and they’re all in literal and metaphorical debt to Russia! If you have some idea about the penalty they’d pay, I for one would love to hear it.

Spelling isn’t a strong suit, is it.

mr. comments sounds suspiciously like the troll last night.

Good old autocorrect, though it did not change the “aide’s” of course. Yes, I missed that, I know how to spell thanks.

Seeing a first grade level phishing scam and being smart enough to open it does make one the smartest person around. But NOT seeing it and opening it certainly puts you in the dumb list.

It’s a shame that you seem to understand less.

Amazing that back in January when it was discovered by the Wall Street Journal that the Obama administration was spying on members of Congress, nobody seemed to think this was a problem.

LOL! Yeah and I can sure tell that Obama benefited from all spying on Congress.
