Discussion for article #226841
Why should we be surprised? That’s Weather-vane McCain for you. He ran away from McCain Feingold too.
but at least he always advocates for war!
Check this ad from 4 years ago:
If Senator McGrumpy would take the time to look to his left HE’D SEE THE “DANGED FENCE”.
(facepalm)
Go after illegal employers and you won’t need a fence. Don’t take my word for it, just ask Canada.
The problem is in defining the term “secure border.”
For McCain and most conservatives, it means thousands of miles of fence–electrified if possible, hundreds of heavily armed agents—think police response in Ferguson, and zero people crossing illegally.
For sane people, it means minimizing the number of illegal crossings, and working to limit the reasons those crossing take place.
Conservatives’ fear of brown will never allow them to deal with this issue rationally.
OMG!!! Who could have predicted that nothing would happen with immigration with the way the GOTP is?
Oh right, me. Can I get one of them big analyst checks now? I’m happy with five figures. For now.
WILL HE NEVER SHUT UP AND GO AWAY FOREVER! Now would not be soon enough.
McCain is a bitter and broken political figure. He wants to go to war on revenge or any pretense and he seeks revenge in the immigration arena.
Its much more sinister than that I fear.
First of course, militarizing the border of course is seen as a huge win for the MIC.
But the fear of brown people is being purposely driven because they realize which way that demographic tide is favoring.
So everything they can do to minimize and postpone the inevitable, is being done.
Yes, please, Republicans, make sure you keep those brown people out of our nice white country. Jobs, fairness, social safety net, none of you care about that, obviously.
You think that at least ONE Republican would have learned something from Pete Wilson destroying the California GOP…
This secure the border first meme is pure nonsense and an excuse not to do anything. Any reasonable person can see that border security isn’t the problem. The reason people come amount to about four; birthright citizenship, employment, drug trafficking, and to meet up with relatives already here. Eliminate those problems and border crossings or other means of getting here will thin to a trickle.
We need to address those problems in a sensible way. This country needs to end birthright citizenship because it is one of the biggest motivators in addition to employers who hire illegal immigrants. Birthright citizenship has a multiplier effect and is costing this country a fortune. Jail and heavily fine employers who hire them. We have visa programs that give temporary status for work and we have a process whereby people can apply to come legally. If they can’t come legally they should not come.
People who do not live near the border with Mexico as I do have little knowledge of it. An iron fence would present many difficulties. Too many to list here. It’s not practical to completely seal the border as the repubs want. Nixon tried to seal the border in the 70’s and his “operation Intercept” lasted two weeks and failed.
I agree. You have to eliminate the reasons they come. That is one reason I am a big advocate of ending birthright citizenship. Canada and the United States are the only two remaining economically developed countries that still allow birthright citizenship. Birthright citizenship is a major attraction for people to come illegally. Once an illegal immigrant has a child in the U.S. with birthright citizenship it is highly unlikely the family will be deported. The excuses being we can’t separate families and we can’t deport U.S. citizens. Besides illegal immigration the other means for having children with birthright citizenship are birth tourism and people here on a temporary status such as visa holders and foreign diplomats.
Birth tourism is mostly people from countries like China, South Korea, and India. They come here as tourist for the person of giving birth to a child who then has dual citizenship. Some of these mothers have said the benefits of having a child with birthright citizenship is so great it is worth it.
To do what you suggest would require gutting the 14th amendment to the Constitution. To do that would require 2/3rd of Congress agreeing to a change. Then 3/4’s of the state legislatures must agree. Or a Constitutional Convention could be called by Congress at which time the entire document would be placed at risk. are you still willing? One of the prime ways of eliminating illegal border crossing is to find a way for people in Mexico to make a living wage. They come here because our economy offers a chance that theirs does not. One other thing. Over the last half decade, prior to last October, illegal crossing was way way down. Since October there’s been a rash of unaccompanied children crossing the border and then presenting themselves to our border agents. That too is now going down.
Crash McCain backpedals one more time.
McCain and some GOP voters are actually disingenuous. They don’t want to fine and or imprison crook employers. The fence is smoke and mirrors.
Reagan didn’t just legalize ~4 million illegal immigrants. He said we no longer needed rigorous corporate oversight and canned all but ~1000 employer inspectors. What looked like a liberal Republican flipping his legalization wig was simply an opportunity to decimate crook employer enforcement.
McCain still hasn’t got it. There can be no effective border security while Congress creates incentives for those who have, and will, cross our borders illegally, period.

I am not so sure. Ending birthright citizenship to the offspring of illegal aliens could be addressed by either Congress or the US Supreme Court. I believe there is a very good case that can be made that illegal aliens are not within the jurisdiction, legally.
The 14th Amendment history seems to indicate that the Citizenship Clause was never intended to benefit illegal aliens nor legal foreign visitors temporarily present in the United States.*
The U.S. Supreme Court has held that the U.S.-born children of permanent resident aliens are covered by the Citizenship Clause, but the Court has never decided whether the same rule applies to the children of aliens whose presence in the United States is temporary or illegal.*
Some eminent scholars and jurists have concluded that it is within the power of Congress to define the scope of the Citizenship Clause through legislation and that birthright citizenship for the children of temporary visitors and illegal aliens could likely be abolished by statute without amending the Constitution.*
