Discussion for article #223657
Interesting hint that more than the Quataris will be keeping an eye on them over the next year, and presumably beyond.
Certainly a cautionary note if you’re one of the five, or any Taliban, for that matter.
Do the rightwing really doubt our capabilities as much as they appear to?
Hysterical fearfulness is a big part of the RWNJ world view. Society is crumbling, every Muslim is a terrorist, tyranny looms blah blah. But I don’t think there’s much to worry about. Qatar’s as good as place as any for those Taliban guys; they’ll be in a fishbowl and will not be likely to cause problems.
“the Qataris aren’t the “only ones keeping an eye on” the released Taliban members over the next year.”
Much can read in that statement and should be. I do not believe for one second that these guys were released without our having the capability to track and monitor them.
It’s almost scary how quickly the RWNJs can whip their mindless minions into fits of hysteria. IMHO these folks need some monitoring also.

You’re not trustworthy, just a Fool.
“…they also have an ability to get killed…”
Plain spoken like a military veteran awarded a Silver Star. Mince no words.
Those chicken hawk Republican conservatives, who chose to become career politicians instead of serving our country, can stop fretting their little heads over five Taliban being released. As long as the military has a Democratic Commander In Chief, they’ll effectively deal with those guys.
I forgive Republicans for their worry, however. The military in the hands of Republicans? Inept!
Even I start worrying then!
Dick Cheney said he was “busy doing other things at the time”
You mean that’s not good enough for you?
I love how the chicken hawks are wringing their little hands and shedding tears about how this will put 'Muricans in harms way. What these cowards fail to recognize, because they never served, is that they are already in harms war. Since these disingenuous cowards don’t understand that war is inherently dangerous how could they understand that soldiers are always in harms way.
I guess the chicken hawks think that women and men on the front lines are living the same lives that others of their generation are living in Santa Monica and Georgetown , last night was just another fun Saturday night at the local pick 'em up bar.
Mr. Kerry, can you tell us why it took the whole 5 years for the Obama administration to get this done? It’s not like we didn’t have those released terrorists in our prison or that we didn’t know who kidnapped this American soldier for the past 60 months or so. So why now? Why did it take you so long?
In reply to the lily-livered chicken hawk just above I think the bigger question is why, after five years of pissing and moaning about getting Sgt. Bergdahl released ASAP has the GOTP and it’s flock of chicken-hawks suddenly reversed course.
THAT is worthy of some examination.
Additionally just how patriotic for the shameless chicken hawks to threaten the Bergdahl family? Where is the honor and patriotism in that?
When adults are having a discussion children should not interrupt with their questions. So you go get your toys and then go outside and play in the sandbox.
I’d love to see him dealing with the Taliban in any capacity. He’d end up lying in the village square one morning with a few body parts missing.
You do know, of course, that these men were going to be released at the end of hostilities anyway, right?
I am certain that you understand that they are categorized as POWs and, with the war drawing to a close, we couldn’t just execute them, right?
You also know that they are in the nominal custody of the Qataris and this is a delicate diplomatic dance where good faith maneuvers are going to set the tone for our future dealings in the region, right?
So, put it all together and answer your own question about the timing.
IMHO those particular body parts shriveled and fell off by the time it was three.
Pointless bluster tailored to the domestic market, along with the ritual conflation of the Taliban with al Qaeda. The Taliban have demonstrated during the past 13 years that they’re prepared to accept considerable risk, and to good effect: sooner rather than later the US will leave Afghanistan and the Taliban will remain.
On the subject of retrieving Sgt. Bergdahl, Kerry is unarguably in the right.
I presume this is a rhetorical question but just in case you haven’t been paying full attention, you might want to remember that there has been mention on several occasions that President Obama’s administration has been trying to get him released for years but have been blocked by the GOP at every turn.
Peseident Obama saw an opportunity to bypass them here and took it, having clearly established their obstructionist stance and unwillingness to conform their actions to their rhetoric, being determined to demonstrate the courage to retrieve one of our own anyway.
Describing the bluster aimed at a domestic market as “pointless” explains why you will never be a US Senator of Secretary of State.
Wow, John Kerry tailored his remarks to the domestic political audience? GET OUT!
Oh, snap!
Among the many, many reasons I will never be a senator or secretary of state, contempt for bluster is way down the list. I heard the same tough-guy posturing from two administrations during the Vietnam war, which one would think Kerry would remember, and more recently during both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and of course the conflation of al Qaeda with pretty much anyone we’re shooting at was a signature Bush administration move before the Obama administration adopted it.
It’s unfortunate that US officials and politicians believe that Americans are incapable of adult conversations about conflicts. And before you blame the necessity for this sort of posturing on Republicans, consider that they’re going to attack the administration no matter what Kerry says, or Obama says; this bit of chest-pounding is some red meat for administration supporters. Oohrah! USA! USA!
