Discussion: John Dean On Trump: 'This Is A Level That Richard Nixon Never Went To'

This is a level that Richard Nixon never imagined was even feasible under the immutable laws of physics. Only under Dante…

Well, John, as you may recall, there was that Enemies List…

But he’s right, essentially. Because Nixon was a lot smarter than tRump.

(For us old enough to recall, one of the great moments of reporting on Watergate was Daniel Schorr, reading the Enemies List on live TV when the story broke–only to come upon his own name on the list. Priceless.)

…Trump wanted to use his own DOJ to prosecute his political opponent and his former FBI director

FFS again today, it is our DOJ or the DOJ, it is not nor will it ever be his DOJ

Please, either do better or do nothing. :unamused:

I never imagined I’d see a day when Richard Freaking Nixon seems like the more reasonable choice in a comparison with the current “president.”

We don’t know how many more levels he has descended. To borrow from Donald Rumsfield, there are" knowns knowns, known unknowns, and unknown unknowns." (Something else to add to the list of things I thought I would never do, right next to thinking of Nixon as more reasonable.)

"According to the Times report, while Trump wanted to use his own DOJ to prosecute his political opponent and his former FBI director, Don McGahn, former White House counsel, stepped in to persuade him against it."

Like Rachel pointed out last night, every time we hear a leak that probably originated with McGahn he comes off as heroic. I am starting to think McGahn is the guy who wrote that anonymous op-ed that the Times published a few months (20 years?) ago. Certainly, anyone as feral as TRump would feel perfectly OK about jailing his political enemies, but a lot of this stuff is starting to feel like the false outrage that FOX is so expert at cranking up. Trump’s main quality, after his spectacular narcissism, is his complete and total incompetence. He isn’t going to jail Hillary, but if he keeps trying he may succeed in jailing himself.

Amen to that.

And as for never using the DOJ to go after his enemies, he didn’t need to. Nixon had J. Edgar Hoover to do his dirty work for him. See, e.g., USA vs. John Lennon

Alberto Gonzales has criticized this too. And next up, after a commercial break, we’ll speak with Lucifer in Hell about his own concerns at this latest development. [Teaser clip: Lucifer, amid sulfurous flames, shaking his head and saying, "You know, it really takes a lot to shock me…]

Powerless??

I prefer this icon of yours…

This isn’t a sentence.

Remember, tRump wants to install department chiefs who offer unquestionable compliance with each dictatorial whim.

Exhibit 1: Firing anybody who pushed back on his illegal schemes.

Exhibit 2: Hiring new people who would make the concept of a kakistocracy seem quaint.

It will be very difficult for the new House committees to focus their investigations. There is just so much that needs attention.

We should be so lucky.

And yet, to my knowledge (please correct me if I’m wrong) not a single Republican office-holder has spoken out against Trump’s desire to jail his enemies simply for being his enemies.

Not in a meaningful way, the cowards. Of course they mostly know it’s nuts, would prefer not to say anything, and when confronted I’d imagine they’ve done the Paul Ryan thing, blandly say “I don’t agree with that” and change the subject.
