Okay, on further reflection, Iām confused. Didnāt they āsignalā this last Congress when they carved Homeland Security out of the Cromnibus and only funded it through next month? Isnāt this fight exactly the one they stated they intended to have once they controlled the Senate? Is the news here that Boehner is really going to go through with it? Because Iāve already noted that itās dumb, but itās a piece of dumbassery theyāve been hellbent to do since Obama unleashed his most Outrageous Outrage Evah!

This is a yawner. The last sentence, the quote of Sen. Mitchell, says it all. The Department of Homeland Security will be funded as scheduled. Which doesnāt necessarily make me happy given the violation of privacy rights to which DHS routinely engages.

Aaand 2 years of nihilism, obstruction and general destructiveness from the Tea Party wing of the GOP has begun. No price is too high for Americans to pay for the Republicans to get their way. But they really want to āwork across the aisleā to get the peopleās work done. Honest.

Yep. Most unnecessary, redundant department ever created. Does nothing but consume funds and get in the way of existing agencies. If they shut it down, no one would notice. And I am fine with ābig governmentā when itās needed so donāt misunderstand. DHS was always a bow and a payment to the defense and security industriesāa way to funnel more funds to Halliburton-like firms. Good riddance.

Let them explain how shutting down an agency of their own invention, premised on the protection Americans from foreign threat, serves the American people in a quarrel over foreigners.

Yes. This sounds like his strategy regarding certain bills before the election: Let stuff pass the House that will appease the nuttier sections of his caucus, then pass them on to a Senate that very likely wonāt let it pass.

Nice idea, but it will never happen. Simple. Congress will not do anything that is against their own self interest. Their interest is getting elected the first time and staying in Congress until the day they die or retire. The benefits are just too cushy to pass up.
