Discussion: Joe Arpaio Enters Tough Primary Amid Worst Legal Troubles Of His Career

Man, I hope this jagoff goes down.

The sheriff rose to national political prominence by jailing inmates in tents in triple-degree summer temperatures and dressing them in pink underwear, and by cracking down on illegal immigration.

The pink underwear and tent city debacles were innovations of the housing boom, when cracking down on illegal immigrants would have greatly inconvenienced the real estate developers. One thing most people may not know about the Phoenix metro area is that most of the newer subdivisions are walled off. Therefore, by blocking two exits, deputies could’ve effortlessly rounded up hundreds of construction workers a day at any job site in the Valley. It wasn’t until after the bubble burst, when people really turned on one another and the deputies started “crime sweeps” of Hispanic-majority neighborhoods for such menaces as rolling stops and illegally burnt out tail lights.

Orange is the new black, Joe.

You’ll look smashing in it. Just like the orange hot-air buffoon.

Really? Can you point me to a couple of them, so I can google map and take a look?

Fifty-four million dollars in taxpayer money … just to defend this Boil on Arizona’s ass. Wow. That’s a lot of road repair or education dollars. The mind boggles.

Didnt he also conduct a reality TV show from his prison camp? I seem to recall that as a feature of his original rise to prominence.

No D could get away with this BS. Shows what top level Rs really think of our political system.

He knows how to massage the Right’s hate prostate. $11.3 million for a county sheriff’s office.

Sadly, he’d probably just be elected to a higher office.

Remember that GOP of today rewards extremism. By selling their souls to the devil (aka racism/bigotry/intolerance/Trump), they’ve become a revolting and pathetic shadow of their former selves.

Not at 84.

It doesn’t mean much. McCain’s 80 and he’s running for re-election.

Politicians suffer a misconception in that they think they age like fine wine, and are indispensable. Apparently, no one can do the job they do as well as they can. Because reasons. Even though at > 80 years old they’re already very much dancing with the grim reaper, and their minds are absolutely not operating at full capacity.

Not really. Maricopa County isn’t a hotbed of liberal tolerance after all. I’ve immigrant relatives, and once they achieved middle class, they moved to Arizona and became straight ticket Republicans. The “both parties are the same so I’ll just vote ®” is very strong there.

Now that’s just sad on many levels. Being a white dude from (barely) the South, I have very few Democratic family members (or friends, for that matter). I hate it. A lot of times, it feels like I’m in a room full of an ongoing party, screaming, but everyone else is going about their business partying like there’s nothing wrong … blissfully ignorant there is a monster outside trying to break in and murder us all. I don’t tell many people this, but I live a very lonely life here (mostly due to my stupid spine deformities). There are very few like-minded people in my social circles (read $$$) and most of my family members are fucking GOPers or a “both sides do the exact same thing” kinda people. In this sense, I really miss my Dad – dude had his issues, but he was a die-hard Democrat. LOL.

84, time to retire Joe. I don’t know why he’s hanging on. Nothing better to do, I’m sure. Not surprised he’s a Trumpy. That’s Trump’s core demographic, grumpy old white bigots from southern states, or a state that wishes it was southern.

In this pic Joe looks pale, was this the day he got the news he was going to be taken to court on Fed charges?

Baseline road a few blocks (before and after the big Safeway market on the right) east of the 101. My son lives in the area… Or just pick a major road in Mesa, Chandler, or Scottsdale or Phoenix proper. The walls are meant for noise control from traffic. It is also common to see homes with walls around them. In fact my home here in Tucson has a 5 foot high wall around the property. It’s a Mexican custom and one seen in many parts of the world.

Our new governor wouldn’t spend money on education if his life depended on it. Two years ago we had $450 million in a “rainy day fund” and he still cut $100 million from higher education claiming there was no money in the state budget.

I hope the sheriffs opponents mention the hundreds of rape kits Arpaio left untested. He bloviates about being tough on crime yet could care less about the victims or solving crimes.
