GOP’r thought bubble: “Look at all these women getting emotional over this”.
If Ryan recognizes that he would need some assurances regarding family commitments before he takes the Speaker’s position, why does not not think it appropriate that employees in America have LEGAL protection for certain family issues, as well? If members of Congress want assurances, then the workers of America also need legal assurances which protect them and permit them to legally have time off for certain situations. Most developed countries in the world have some sort of legal protections in such situations.
Put a sock in it Mr., MY GAWD what an annoying man, his voice is bombastic…I had to laugh at his suggestion that Republican could UNITE behind Paul…the Democrats should worry if they do…LOL
I’d worry about his own before he starts THREATENING the Democrats.
Republicans ARE their own worse enemy and to think that Paul Ryan is going to RIDE IN on his ELEPHANT and save the day is as far fetched as the Republicans claiming they know how to govern. The Republicans, mostly white men, are pledge hateful BASTARDS. Jus say’n.
Doug Heye and Joan Walsh are missing the real issue here.
I think that Jake Ryan’s request for time with his family is a coded dog whistle. I think it has little to do with the actual needs of his family.
Remember Kevin McCarthy brought his family to the Capitol to demonstrate contrition for nailing Renee Ellmers on the side.
The CEO of Yahoo Marissa Mayer took only two weeks off after the birth of a child in 2012, and now that’s she’s expecting twins in December she has said she will again take as little time off as possible. Yahoo has a fairly generous maternity leave program and for her not not to take advantage of it only fuels the R’s fantasies of working women loving their jobs so much they’ll give it a higher priority than a newborn or in this case two.
Ryan’s the guy who if he were ever to resign would give the excuse of wanting to spend more time with his family
Yes, he is a PR master. The way he posed, postured and strung the hungry salivating GOP puppies to his teats for the milk of his humanoid kindness and the scent of his divine grace before announcing his willingness to be considered as speaker was impressive. To top things off he made pretentious and absurd demands as well. He has some sort of messianic aspiration disorder.
Many conservatives are sick and tired of his drama.
Oy vey, a GOP mishegoss!
I don’t think Walsh is missing the point at all, I think she’s just bringing up a different point which happens to be the double standard applied to men and women. Ryan is being praised for demanding that the position doesn’t interfere with family time. Her point is that if a woman were in the same position and demanded the same concession, she wouldn’t be praised, she’d be told not to run.
Yet this guy ran for Vice President of the United States. I wonder if he would be able to have weekends off in that office.
Congress only works one or two days a week. How much more time off does he need?
I think it’s humorous that he wants guaranteed time with his family if he takes the speakers job, doesn’t he realize by now how little time congress does meet??
Yea,she does it all herself… those nannies, cooks, maids, housekeepers, gardeners, admin aids, etc… are just a figment of your imagination.
Good point!
On the sociological extrapolation we agree.
My point is that Jake Ryan’s comments were a either precious PR stunt meant as music for the ears of the family values conservatives or a subterfuge to silence critics looking for the skeletons in his cupboard.
Joan was smart to catch the way that right-winger defended Ryan - that he wanted Sunday morning off to watch “his Packers.” Can’t make him look like a wuss who looks after his kids, can we?
I think the main point of Joan busting Strategist Todd the mansplainer-dick with the Packers-kids juxtaposition was that if he wants to claim he needs this time at home, why is he trying to get a sympathetic free ride as some supposed good family man when what he really wants to do is root for a violent game, eat and fart. Why doesn’t Mr. Integrity just come out and say it? “I wanna watch football for the hundredths time, that’s why”.
Why not Todd? What’s preventing I-am-not-an-econmomist Paul from just telling us the truth you just spoke?
Uh Doug, sounds kinda the same.
If you review hundreds of interviews where there are opposing sides, the conservatives will always try to dominate by interrupting more and getting in more time than the Dem or liberal. That just may have been one of the post-Goldwater decisions made behind closed doors to beat down liberal thought wherever and whenever possible (In addition to think tanks, destroying unions, demonizing government and taxes, and on and on.) And Dems, usually, will often let them spout off too long. It’s particularly true with a conservative and a liberal woman. They’ll shout louder and raise their voice over the woman. Old techniques. You can barely hear Joan here.
Joan is correct, a woman would be promising she had someone else watching the kids so she could devote all of her time to the job. That’s how a woman gets taken as “a serious person”.
