Discussion for article #238778
I don’t see how the deeply held religious beliefs of these people can be denied.
Lock them up for what? They thrive on bad arrests over which they can then sue and win.
Nothing (not even this) can help dickboy Jindal’s ridiculous star-crossed campaign so I don’t really mind saying, “Lock 'em up, Governor!”
For, you know, nothing other than fulfilling the man’s fantasy of being able to call out the jackboot thugs to arrest people.
Hmmmn, didn’t know. If they can be lawfully incarcerated, then do so carefully. If not, then laws should be examined for possible changes not violating Constitution.
Correct.
I also think they need the income right now.
Bad chess move from a Republican?
Shocking.
WBC is composed of some of the most odious humans on the face of the earth.
But Jindal’s just grandstanding here, to try to convince somebody somewhere that he’s not a total asshole. 'Cause he know damned well that WBC has the same rights to free speech guaranteed to us all under the U.S. Constitution. They may not, say, block a funeral procession or in any other way impede lawful traffic, but they have a perfect right to stand at the side of the rode holding their evil signs and shouting their evil slogans.
He said if they “disrupt” the funerals they will be arrested. The First Amendment grants the right to “peaceable” assembly. Disruptive assembly is not peaceful. If you block sidewalks or roads, or in this case interfere with a funeral, you can in fact be arrested because you have no right to do that. If they protest from a few blocks away, no problem. If they create a scene right at the funeral and disrupt the service, they can in fact be arrested.
Oh, I can’t stand Jindal, but he has every right in this case to bust these assholes if they are disruptive.
He is a dick, but in this case he did use the word “disrupt”, and you do not have a right to disrupt the funeral.
If they protested a funeral of someone close to me, I doubt that I could keep myself for getting arrested myself. I know, that’s what they want, but my tolerance for hate only go so far and in times of great stress, seeing this shit would send of over the edge.
Nobody hates WBC more than me but I think they know exactly what they can and cannot do. Remember, one of their members argued a first amendment case in front of SCOTUS and won.
But what about their “Religious Free-DUMBS” ???
Cannot they “express their deeply held Religious Beliefs” without the “heavy hand of the STATE oppressing them!”
Jindal is SUCH a pandering asshole…
But the Founding Fathers knew firsthand about government choking religious liberty. This is not a new conflict. They knew what they were doing. This is not just some things that have changed recently. It’s why a fundamental part of the Bill of Rights in our Constitution codifies that the government is protecting—not creating—our God-given rights including religious liberty rights. Without those religious liberty rights, there’s no freedom of speech and no freedom of association as well.
But only as it pertains to gay marriage, I guess. Religious nutjobs who want to use their religious liberty to do something Bobby doesn’t agree with can back the fuck off, apparently.
In Snyder v Phelps the protests by WBC were 300 meters (over 3 football fields) away from the funeral, in an area cordoned off by police. It was in accordance with local ordinances, and they could not be seen or heard by anyone at the funeral. That is not disruptive. Idiotic, yes, but they do have idiocy rights when not disruptive. If they go past police barriers and such, as we see in many protests, they have crossed the line and can be arrested.
The family complained that it became a media circus, and that’s why they sued. The media are the ones who created the disruption actually. The media should ignore these WBC assholes.
But the WBC protested legally in that case. If the area they were cordoned off in by police was an area where they could not be seen or heard, that in no way was disruptive to the funeral. Jindal said if they “disrupt” the funeral he would have them arrested, not if they just “protested”.
Strange that Piyush doesn’t just exorcise em’! “Be gone you foul evil demons from hell!” ___Guess he’d have to be careful. I understand he did that once in D.C. and all of the Republican leadership disappeared. Too bad they found their way back!!!

And then I hope the little cult sues him and he’s out of the debates.
But that’s what they do. They’re incredibly inflammatory, but make certain they don’t block anything and when they push someone over the edge and that person hits them, they sue the crap out of them, where the funerals are being held, the theater where the people were killed and the State for not providing enough security.
They’re horrible con artists that make their living off human suffering.
He is just playing into their hand. They have legal experts on the first amendment as part of t heir congregation. In fact I suspect they want him to deny them their deeply held religious beliefs.
They protested at a soldier’s funeral near where I live. My wife and I watched them as we drove by. My wife, a genuinely gentle person, wanted to get out and beat the protesters with their own disgusting signs, but they stayed at the exact distance where they were obligated to stay by ordinance. They didn’t violate any law. They are the most obnoxious people imaginable, but they follow the law. In short they are taunting and praying that good people attack them. That is how they turn their performance art into profit.
