Carter to Cockholster: “Keep the peace, promote human rights and tell the truth.”
Comedy is not dead.
Decency is not dead either.
I’ve thought the same thing for a while. I know N. Korea is also run by a egomaniac, but it seems like it would be so easy to ignore his BS, help him out so his country ran better and maybe he’d calm the fuck down. I just don’t get the point of poking a bees nest. Sure you might be able to kill most of the bees but there’s a good chance you’ll get a few stings and you might find out too late you’re allergic.
If South Korea or China can’t “calm North Korea down” why would you imagine that the United States would have any influence on them?
Help them develop infrastructure, food and water, healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, pollution control, trade…you know they things that help keep folks alive and happy. Granted the folk running our country don’t seem to give a shit about getting those things working well in our country.
Because one of the big things that’s been blatantly and obviously motivating the last few members of the Kim dynasty is the drive for respect. When we engaged with them diplomatically, when we offered the carrot (in the form of aid), not just the stick, their nuclear progress slowed.
Carter’s spot on here. For 64 years, there’s been only the U.N. ceasefire telling NK that we’re not going to pre-emptively flatten them. Give 'em a goddamned peace treaty already, but make it contingent on a formal end to the Korean War.
Love that guy. Watch his “Malaise speech” as Right Wingers called it.
It will remind you that Democrats were the party of truth, and how Republicans destroyed truth and replaced it creative destruction, and the Laffler curve.
Carter was a modern day Nostradamus with the balls to tell us all our real future. It all happened just like he predicted, and the Republicans put him up on the cross for it. Democrats, instead of defending Carter, watched.
Then Bill Clinton decided to emasculate the Democrats with a triangulation strategy that got him a trial for impeachment in return. It got us GW Bush and a forever war in the Middle East that Carter predicted in that speech. It got us a Republican Party that openly destroys the middle class, and a President that is committing seppuku on this nation on orders from a foreign nation that has given missile technology by proxy to North Korea.
If Carter had predicted Trumps rise in 1978, even I would have thought he was nuts, But he did. In that speech. We just didn’t decifer it, because in 1978, Carter was that far ahead of us all.
