Discussion for article #222747
I don’t recall any NYT fuck-ups that were any worse than all of their fuck-ups in the lead-up to the Iraq war.
Any guesses as to what she did wrong?
Dear NYTimes,
If you’re going to “suddenly replace” someone, it should have been Maureen Dowd, who’s been writing the same column about Obama for 6+ years at this point. Her column is a waste of valuable real estate.

Maybe she’s moving on to be the executive editor of The Intercept?
i’d like to add david brooks, ross asshat and the enormous moustache of understanding.
I predict that your wish will come true in one Friedman unit.
Too many clashes with CEO Mark Thompson who has yet to answer for his sins at the BBC.
I should’ve quit reading Dowd when she said this about Al Gore in 1999: “Al Gore is so feminized and diversified and ecologically correct that he’s practically lactating.”
When Maureen called Obama “Obambi,” I quit clicking on her columns. I’d rather read David Brooks than Dowd, at least he isn’t a one trick pony.
Do the fckups increase readership?
I’ve been struck by the people leaving the Gray Lady of their own accord. Big names like David Pogue, Nate Silver, and Frank Rich, and less-celebrated people too. They go to online startups, or less-renowned papers, which is really surprising. People don’t leave an institution like the NYT unless things are really, really bad and likely to get worse.
interesting … does it sound like she left of her own accord though?
anyone know how this compares to the average tenure as executive editor there?
Vivant: For years, I too, never missed Dowd until these comments about Gore. Frankly, I backslide now and then, usually when a friend asks, “Did you read Dowd today?”
But “Obambi” tore it for me.
This effort to discredit a perfectly normal male by “feminizing” him is thuggish at best, even coming from a woman.
“an issue with management in the newsroom”.
That usually means the troops were threatening mutiny.
Likely did not know how to handle people – especially prima donnas.
No, based on the suddenness and the nature of the announcement it is pretty clear she didn’t leave on good terms.
I hate when she calls him Barry more than I hate when she calls him Obambi.
In 2007 Abramson was seriously injured when a truck hit her near the Times building. Her lingering injuries could have affected her performance.
It certainly reveals some hangups of Dowd that perhaps are better left hidden.
Not hardly. Just saying as a side comment.
