Discussion: Jeb Bush Wants To Gradually Raise The Retirement Age

Discussion for article #235395

Thus, Jeb attempts to join the ranks of the Very Serious People that the Beltway Villagers will fawn over, because, you know, he sounds verrry serious in a fatuously Bowles-Simpsony-Paul Ryany kind of way.

Just raise the cap, ya bludger! Pity someone doesn’t raise a knot on that thick, entitled, empty skull of yours

Gosh, if we raise it to 120, think of all of the money that it’ll save! The fund would be solvent forever!

Back to work grandpa.

“It’s gonna cost me money if I have to replace the people who know what they’re doing with some of young bozos out there in the Base!”

Jebby, jebby, jebby. Keep this crap up and Rand Paul will get your nomination.

Raise the freakin’ cap on wages and be done with your “fixes”.

Because of course it’s so easy to find work when you’re over 55.

Point is, if you’re running for public office, you want to be sure to raise this sort of policy real early, so you and your aides and bundlers get to raise this constantly with your rich backers at private fund-raisers for the longest possible time, and yet there’s so much time left in the campaign and so many events between now and election day, you also figure stoopid people too busy working 3 jobs to feed the kids and running from police stops are just going to forget and lose focus on why they should vote at all.

The great thing about our never-ending elections model is how many opportunities it allows for establishment politicians to come together and renew the commitment of the Founders to periodically act to ensure that granny, the kiddies, working moms, the unemployed, people of color, and of course the poors, get and stay royally screwed. The fat lady will now sing.

The Republicans want to gradually raise the retirement age to 150. Then, when no one claims the benefits, they’ll give the money to rich people.

Right now the retirement age is 62-70, with your yearly benefit higher the longer you delay starting benefits. This helps the people with jobs that aren’t so physically demanding.

Jeb ought to have a nice chat with his sister-in-law’s sister-in-law.

These proposals screw middle age folks AND younger folks. The middle aged have to work longer, and the younger ones coming up behind can’t find jobs because the oldsters won’t/can’t retire.

Japan has mandatory retirement ages. China, too. And it’s precisely so that the young can start their careers while they are still “young.”

Even over 50 for that matter.
Our parents, our late parents in law and now my wife and I became so racked with arthritis we’d be royally screwed if we had to wait past 65.
Just a bunch of sadists these “conservatives”.

Translation: We need to cut benefits for poor people to save money for my people.

I am 63, my wife 66. Raising the retirement age is very do-able, and a good approach to continued viability of the SS retirement system. I don’t plan on getting SS until I am 71, but that depends on keeping my job, etc.

It won’t apply to you. GOPs are careful to make these changes applicable only to those cuurently under 55.

Probably true. Note that a large proportion of folks who are my age are in good physical shape, and able to work a little longer. Of course, that means that they keep jobs instead of allowing younger folks to get hired. So there is no universal good here. Compared to my grandparents (grandfather died of heart disease at my age, grandmother had totally white hair at 50), I am in very good shape. Wife also.

Did you ever notice how the people that want to raise the retirement age are always the ones that sit for a living? Maybe they should try being and iron worker, sanitation worker, farm laborer or just about any of the minimum wage jobs out there. and see what they think about the retirement age after a six months on the job?
