Discussion: Jeb Bush Says Brother George 'Kept Us Safe' As President

Well, there was that one time…

How does he get away with saying something like that?

Because life just isn’t fair. Seriously, the extended version is even better.

What a load of utter fucking horseshit. The biggest attack on American soil happened when Bush the Younger was President because Bush, Cheney, Rummie, Wolfowitz, and the rest of the Bushie neocons failed to see al Queda as a threat (this in spite of the available intelligence and the attack on the USS Cole that had just occurred in the waning months of the Clinton presidency), the Bushies stopped hunting for Osama bin Laden and al Queda so that they could focus on whipping the country into a frenzy so that we could invade Iraq (a country that was never a threat to the US), and the war in Iraq has been a better terrorist recruiting tool than the jihadists could ever have dreamed. This is obviously by no mean a complete listing of Bush the Younger’s failings, but they are some of the highlights.

Self delusion is the worst form of lying.

You can depend on yet another sleazy, corrupt Bush to lie in public. Seems to run very deep in that family of power hungry incompetents.

Debbie! Debbie! Calling Debbie Wassermann Schultz. Democrats want and need more debates. Time to schedule them now, or step down as chair. You have not been an effective leader and spokesperson for the party, and the tight hold on the number of debates is the last straw. What was the president thinking?

By making this absurd comment, Jeb is now forced to run on his brother’s record. The rest of his campaign will be replete with revisionist history. The economy will have collapsed on Obama’s watch, not Bush’s. The war in Iraq will have been lost on Obama’s watch, not Bush’s. American troops will have been withdrawn by Obama, not by Bush’s SOF agreement. Will the media call out Jeb when he mouths these lies? Not likely. To do so would ruin the horse race.

Dangerous, too. But we already know that about Jebby, with his Iraq-architect crack adviser team. :anguished:

My memory of Pres. Bush’s behavior after the World Trade buildings were destroyed was of our glorious president scurrying around the country in Air Force One looking for a hiding place. He didn’t embrace the rubble, fireman, etc. until about 3 days after 9/11. Pretty ignominious behavior for a great leader.

What Trump should’ve responded with was:

“No! Your brother absolutely did NOT keep America safe. On who’s watch did 911 happen? Bill Clinton’s? Barak Obama’s? No, it happened on your brother’s watch. And then he went off chasing phantom WMD’s in Iraq instead of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. Obama got Bin Laden when your brother couldn’t - what does that say about your brother? So, I’m not going to let you lecture me on this stage about how to do foreign policy, because you know what folks, [turning gaze back to the camera] he has the same team of loser advisors that counseled his brother.”

I’m surprised Trump didn’t go there.

Cheney? Terrorism was his portfolio; he was supposedly the head of the task force on terrorism. But that was a Clinton priority, so it must be bullsht. So after Clarke urged immediate action when they took office, Cheney’s task force had its first meeting – on September 10. Damn him to hell for all eternity.

Though let’s not get too nostalgic about Reagan: I’ll give him immigration, but they’re following in his footsteps on the environment (just for starters, his first Secretary of the Interior, James Watt, was a piece o’ work) and on unions (google “PATCO” – breaking that union was a primary cause of his sainthood in the GOP). The occasional bow to sanity and the Democrats’ Congressional majority aside, he was still recognizably, destructively right-wing.

“He kept us safe?!”

Jeb Bush:

You know what? As it relates to my brother, there is one thing I know for sure, he kept us safe.

Sure he did, Jebby. Why don’t you tell that to the victims of 9/11 and their families? To the victims of Katrina? To the victims and families of all the soldiers killed, wounded, or maimed in a fruitless search for non-existent WMD’s in Iraq?

How about you tell that to all the people hurt by the economy that crashed on your brother’s watch?

Well, I suppose you did just tell the latter, since it was pretty much 99% of the whole fucking country hurt by your brother’s incompetent handling of the economy.
