Discussion: Israel's Netanyahu Declares Victory In Tight Election

Discussion for article #234412

Using the GOP tactic of declaring victory, then stealing it.

I read reports denigrating Netanyahu for highlighting the numbers of Arab Israeli voters going to the polls to scare the electorate into rallying to his side. I don’t see much difference between what he’s done and GOP efforts in the U.S. to limit the votes of minorities through voter ID laws and other measures various state legislatures are devising.

Israel just became an arm of the American Right-Wing.

Well, Netanyahu has already admitted that he proposed settlements just to prevent viable Palestinian lands, and that he has no intention of allowing a Palestinian state. I think its time we stop playing this charade, stop all funding to Israel, and impose trade sanctions, just as we do with other pariah states. Enough is enough.

Or vice versa?

I’d be on board for that if you throw in most everything south of the Mason-Dixon with the proposal.

Nationalism is the precursor to fascism. Just ask Hitler. It fucking disgusts me to no end to have to listen to an Israeli leader speak in such terms, particularly when sprinkled with all the racist commentary against Arabs. He sounds liek Hitler getting his shtick together in the 19-teens before hittin’ it big time. And you can cry and whine and feign outrage all you want over someone comparing a Jewish/Israeli leader to Hitler, but there are undeniable elements of similarity. The oppressed growing up to be the oppressors…justifying it all by referring back to their previous oppression…and thus, nothing is out of bounds or off limits in the fight to prevent further victimization.

It’s not 'stealing" if it was yours by right in the first place, eh?

Hold your horses. Netanyahu declaring victory, at this point, has the same validity as if I declare myself King of New Jersey. There has been no concession by ZU, and there is a long night of vote counting to come. As of now it is a disputed election, nothing more.

Good point, the 47 seem more loyal to Israel than the US.

Sounds like whistling past the graveyard to me.

We won’t know the results for a while yet.

I cant stand Netanyahu – but keep it real for gosh sakes. He is not Hitler. He is a paranoid reactionary who overstates things – but his paranoia does have some basis in reality.

I didn’t know that exit polling determined election outcomes in Israel.

Minorities in those states have it bad enough. Why would you like to see them tortured even further?

If so, then we all lose.

Minorities residing in those states are living in a region both historically and currently possessed of an intractable, incurable animus towards them. Staying where they are represents choosing to endure continued abuse, bigotry, oppression and disfranchisement. Let them slowly emigrate northward, over time, until the South is a lily white bastion of unalloyed segregation and hatred. Small theater tactical nukes will cure the problem from there.
