Discussion for article #229159
I listened to that debate. I think she will probably win narrowly.
I still continue shake my head to think that ANY Democrat could be such a strong not-campaigner, a voter-passion suppressor, and spine-challenged operative that they could lose Teddy Fu*king Kennedy’s seat to a Republican in a statewide race in Massachusetts!!! Most days you can fit all of Massachusetts’ Republicans into a nicely appointed tour bus.
I shall never again underestimate Coakley’s ability to not-campaign herself out of an easy win, because Baker is just a more homely Stripper Scotty Brown!

I was so nervous when I saw that she was able to clear her way out of the primary. This is just atrocious.
In a state with such a machine, how can someone ascend to opportunities like this twice without innate talent? If she has a benefactor, they(?) must be old and powerful. Otherwise, why have MA Dems quailed against such an awful retail pol?
If she loses this one, it at least slams the door shut forever.
Why has this reporter omitted the latest news from Mass about Charlie Baker and Chris Christie “pay to play” scandal.
It is all over the Mass. news ???
Someday, she’ll be a meme, e.g. “Now goddammit, Jake, we need to get out there and shake some hands. We’re not gonna pull a fucking Martha Coakley here.”
Coakley in MA, Brown in MD … again the state (party) folks aren’t paying attention and getting stronger candidates in the pipeline.
Silver lining: if she keeps losing statewide we won’t have to nominate her for President. After all, charisma-free Massachusetts Democrats pretty much automatically win the nomination (see: Kerry, Dukakis).
Baker is a crook that will probably go to jail when the pay to play reports from NJ comes out. Baker is also very condescending to women. Remember the reporter he called sweetheart. Baker reminds me of a Scott Walker of Wisconsin who is Chris Christy’s best buddy and so is Baker. If Baker was to win I think the Koch brothers will be a big part of Mass. policies.
They may be paying attention, but you need quality candidates who are also willing to run. Someone may have all of the required skills and traits, but doesn’t want to put themselves or their families through the meat grinder that elections today usually become.
That’s a good question. How can this walking not-winner keep getting nominations?
She sucks as a campaigner and seems to think she’s entitled to higher office, time to move on.
Yeah, well, she can’t get to the point of causing heartburn if she isn’t getting the nomination. So how the hell is that happening?
Unfortunately there is a strong tendency here to give the nomination to the person who’s “turn” it is to run for an office. Ability doesn’t always enter into it. Either of the two folks she beat in the primary would be better governors, but the state party made it clear it was her turn.
Because TPM has no reporters: it reports on two day old wire copy. I cannot believe has old the Pennsylvania stories it reports are. (It has not caught up to the fact that Corbett might now win because Tom Wolf and his campaign are too busy doing victory laps. Corbett has almost pulled even after being down 15 points last week.) The only thing it gets up to date is the kind of stuff that would be TMZ if it had a political page.
Its her turn.
Actually, I would’ve been happy with either of the folks she beat in the primary, and they would actually be good. But machine says its her turn.
She probably won’t blow it. In the Democratic primary I was a charter member of the ABC (Anyone But Coakley) Caucus, but she has run a better campaign than she did four years ago. She is hampered by not having enough money, but Charlie Baker is a re-tread, he doesn’t excite (hoodwink) people like Scott Brown did, people remember that Brown sold them a bill of goods (and if they don’t, the ads on Massachusetts TV stations for Brown’s run against Shaheen remind them) and, let’s face it, Charlie was a health-insurance executive. (If I were running Martha’s campaign, I’d put out an ad that said, “Do you really want a health-insurance executive for governor?”) And both of her primary opponents have been out there stumping for her. All in all, she’ll probably pull it out. And yes, I’m going to vote for her, if regretfully.
Corbett is closing?
If she loses, it will be due to sexism. Not sexism in the general election, but sexism in the primary, where she was nominated by women who did not look beyond the fact that she wears a skirt. Sorry to say that, but I live in Massachusetts, and I’m convinced that it’s true.
