Discussion for article #244175
Wait, let me check outsideā¦Nope! World still there! - Thanks Obama!
About time, TPM. I saw this on RAI (Radiotelevisione Italiana) almost 24 hours ago.
I get the significance of āTPMā and all, but do we really need to know about every single Trump-fart, Cruz-belch and Huck-burp when there is actual news to report? We (at least most of the faithful here) worked hard for this deal, and the president and Dems in general (aside from the usual Schumers) took no end of flak for it. It would be nice to know promptly when our efforts pay off, especially when they include such paltry items as an attempt to avoid yet another needless war, a strengthening of the hardliners in Iran, a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, and getting along with the rest of the world, among other niceties.
Sorry, but these are political talking points, too, and a trifle more important than the utter crap TPM inundates us with throughout most of the day.
Well, I suppose the GOP is happy now that the high and low enriched material is in the hands of a leader they can trust. Unfortunately, Iām more skeptical now about the security of the uranium than before.
yes, be very afraid, cause now russia has nuclear capability.
yeah, but it aināt in iran. go figure. unless, of course, it was fake uranium. better check in with fox news to get the lowdown.
We should be glad the Russians agreed to make the trade, we certainly couldnāt do it. Besides, Itās not like they actually need any HEU, they already have plenty. What better place is there that the Iranians would actually make the trade with?
Was this a nudgenudge/winkwink Russian/Iranuss deal ?
"shh that uranium is in safe hands. Just ask a Republican. "
Sadly our side has been sucked into the Trump mania. Then we wonder why RWNJs laugh at us for throwing away our victories. TPM no different from MSNBC and other corporate media beholden to the GOP
If only weād taken the GOPās advice and either bombed Iran or stopped the negotiations (all the while talking extra ātoughā), just think of how much better this situation would have turned out. /s
Yeah, in the scheme of things there was no other country that could have stood in for Russia in this exchange. On the other hand the security of the Russian stockpile continues to be a huge concern to the US and the potential of a non-state player getting ahold of some.
Amazing silence from the critics and I must say the lack of desire by TPM commenters (except for those here) that this is not interesting to discuss. Yet, DT farted yesterday and it was headline news.
And for sure we will never see or hear from Darcy giving the president any credit either. I couldnāt find it in the NYTimes.
Yep thatās the problem. Ironic that the same fissile properties that make the bombs work in the first place are what make it so difficult to smuggle the stuff, luckily.
The Times had it, chammy (thereās a reason I still read it despite their awful political coverage); but youād have had a hard time finding it almost anywhere else, especially on tv aside from MSNBC prime timeā¦
Do we or donāt we have an ongoing program to get nukes out of Russian hands? In post-USSR collapse there was a big effort, but I canāt find if it continued under Bush and Obama.
I believe we have mutual controls, strictly observed locations where fissile material is secured in both countries; and the Obama administration has done yeomanās work in getting that material out of other countries over the years. I remember a particularly riveting Rachel Maddow segment on that effort from several years ago ā canāt find the segment itself, but hereās a writeup on it:
Thanks for the link and sorry for late reply (holiday break, yay!)
No worries; Happy New Year!
