Discussion for article #244464
…light a match?
I sympathize, but when I read this…
“We’re not a bunch of hicks. We’re like Porter Ranch, it’s like, you know, the Beverly Hills of the valley,” Derohanian said. “We’re like BMW people and you’re giving us Pinto service.”
…all I could think of was the kids in Detroit suffering from lead poisoning from the Flint River.
*We’re not a bunch of hicks. We’re like Porter Ranch, it’s like, you know, the Beverly Hills of the valley," Derohanian said. "We’re like BMW people and you’re giving us Pinto service.

“We’re not a bunch of hicks. We’re like Porter Ranch, it’s like, you know, the Beverly Hills of the valley,” Derohanian said. “We’re like BMW people and you’re giving us Pinto service.”
Shoddy reporting. There’s so much more to cover about this leak than to pull quotes that make people look like privileged twits. SoCalGas has been reactive, had no disaster plan, had not replaced safety valves that were recommended replaced in 1979, etc. etc. etc.
“> We’re not a bunch of hicks. We’re like Porter Ranch, it’s like, you know, the Beverly Hills of the valley,” Derohanian said. “We’re like BMW people and you’re giving us Pinto service.”
Try reading this quote out loud in the voice of Thurston Howell III – it fits perfectly!
These sniveling home owners had better just get their heads screwed on straight and realize that energy companies are God and if god wants to fart in your face for months on end, you just buck up and breathe deeply!
If it were Texas, most of the residents wouldn’t have health insurance, the’d shield the utility company from any liabilities while inducing it to increase the size of the natural gas storage facility, while building addition schools and hospitals in the adjacent area.
O please. There was nothing shoddy about this report. If this is what this person said, then that’s a reflection on how this person is feeling. Why accuse the reporter of making all the residents look like privileged twits? There is probably a lot more reporting to come…
“We’re not a bunch of hicks. We’re like Porter Ranch, it’s like, you know, the Beverly Hills of the valley,” Derohanian said. “We’re like BMW people and you’re giving us Pinto service.”
With that attitude, you are a bunch of hicks, lady.
I feel for anyone going through something like this. I have issues with smoke (cigarette, marijuana, incense, etc.), most perfumes – besides the usual dry, scratchy eyes–yet watery–and throat, I suffer bad headaches. This is one reason I am very insistent the managing company for my building not use those nasty plug-in “deodorizers.” They are nothing but strong indoor pollution, terrible for anyone with asthma or other allergies. My apartment has only one window and no cross ventilation – and I run an air filtration system 24/7. My building is a non-smoking building but some of the tenants break those rules. I hate to do it, but I do report on them when I notice it – otherwise, I pay the price with awful health … and I already have enough other issues to worry about. The primary reason I chose this place is it’s non-smoking. Competition if pretty fierce here, so rents are really high when compared to surrounding or even similar regions. All of that gives me a lot of empathy for these folks, but when I read such elitist, snobby statements such as what I highlighted, it brings out the snark in me.
Some of those resident’s comments indicate that one of the effects of living in that area is a form of “affluenza”. They’re just learning about the kinds of burdens the majority of Americans have to deal with on a daily basis.
Hope this puts the negligent utility out of business.
Exactly! That quote, from an entitled bim, was sadly my takeaway from the article. And, contrasting with the folks in Detroit is perfect. The ‘gas people’ need help, and they should be using their ‘bmw people’ status to lobby their rich friends… not whine about ‘pinto service’. BTW, my first car was a pinto. Loved it.
There was balance, the first family referenced didn’t seem to be twit like at all. You had to read much further to find the tiwttiness. That being said, the ’ bmw people’ quote was so good… it was in a class all by itself - no pun intended. The author had to use it!!
You would think it is impossible to make the victims of this terrible disaster look bad, but the quote everybody keeps repeating is the one way of accomplishing it.
If there is a rotten tomato award for bad PR, this quote should get it. Worse than Romney 47% comment. And yet, for all I know, the lady who said this insane remark might be a lovely, desperate woman who deserves our sympathy. This might have been the outcry of a soul on the brink of despair.
“I can’t understand all these people,” Bob Casselman said. “Everybody
wants a freebie … Unless something’s really bad, we don’t complain.”
Looks like Cruz has found his VP candidate.
Might it occur to Assholeman - sorry, Casselman to find out why thousands of people have left? What makes idiots like him dismiss the claims of thousands of people, and what “freebie” does he think they’ll be getting?
“We’re not a bunch of hicks. We’re like Porter Ranch, it’s like, you know, the Beverly Hills of the valley,” Derohanian said. “We’re like BMW people and you’re giving us Pinto service.”
Meanwhile in Flint, Michigan…
When will we all realize we’re in this together?
That is about as ignorant a quote as I have read in many, many years. You obviously are among the “Ready…Fire,Aim” people who didn’t even bother to check the FACTS before blathering about this. Just so you know, not so you become less ignorant and/or more sympathetic to the people who are being “gassed,” here are a few FACTS (as opposed to whining that you don’t like people who slam your first car) for you to try and digest.
Using their “status” as “bmw people” to “lobby” their “rich friends”…that would (and has, they haven’t been sitting on their collective asses as you more than imply), they have tried for months to get some help. The reason their pleas fell on deaf ears is that the gas company has, as one of its members of its board of directors, the SISTER of Governor Jerry Brown sitting on the Board. Until they managed to attract widespread media attention to their situation, they could get nothing done to help them out with their plight. The California regulators who told them to “…sit down, shut up and keep your feet off the seats…” were insulated from any kind of pressure to get the situation under control for a disaster that the regulators are, in part, responsible for. You see, these regulators failed, for many years, to do their jobs and REGULATE. They never really checked up on SoCalGas to insure that it were doing a proper job of maintaining the gas line. It’s not as if this came out of the blue. SoCalGas has had numerous failures of this very line in recent years, but were never compelled to do something about it.
Now that a disaster has happened the company and the regulators have done their best to stonewall each and every inquiry from frustrated homeowners, and refused to provide information to the news media in a callous attempt to “manage” the information, not fix the pipeline. The news media (including TPM) have failed to adequately press the regulators and company executives, DEMANDING answers and the proper assistance for the victims of this catastrophe.
You see, it pays to have friends (and/or family members) in high places when it comes to not helping people out in a situation that you created. That and having ignorant people like yourself who would rather slam the victims rather than where it should be slammed…at the company and the regulators. I hope that you are never in a position like these people find themselves in. They will find a whole lot of people like you attacking them instead of the abusive creators of this disaster. No, your problem is not about “bmw people” whining about their plight, it is with the fact that these “bmw people” happen to be well-to-do and you (and those like you) are jealous of their success. Sleep well tonight.
Wow Pimple… you got all in a lather over a bit of sarcasm. Take a pill or something. BMW lady didn’t frame her issue around regulation or prevention. She was pissed that she was being treated like a pinto person. Hope you are able to relax this Sunday.
And Pimple… I sleep just fine.
