Discussion for article #243410
“My first consideration is not to objectify the family and make them an object of notoriety,” he said. “They are human beings … Our desire is to respect human beings.”
While I fully agree with this sentiment–I really do–I wonder if Catholic Charities felt the same way when the state was roiling over marriage equality and how that fit in with the overall “They are human beings” feelings.
Again, I am happy to see someone of such stature stand up for what is right here.
Following the meeting with Pence on Wednesday, Tobin told the Associated Press that he would “give serious consideration” to what the governor said.
Seriously?
With all due respect Catholic Charities doesn’t have too many dogs in political fights, unless its about losing funding for the people ( the least among us) it serves. The Archdiocese, on the other hand, is a cesspool of political muck.
Mike Pence, preceded by Dan Burton and succeeded by Count Chocula. Full stop.
I agree with you. My ire should be with the archdiocese and not the charity arm. Thanks.
check me here but wouldn’t Governor Pence have to appeal to Pope Frank for him to overrule Catholic Charities…
“They are human beings …Our desire is to respect human beings.”
Not to the GOP/Teatrolls, they’re not. Aside from having demonized them to the point of being incapable of recognizing their humanity, the GOP/Teatrolls see them as political footballs…brown and to be kicked around. They see nothing but a route to political gain and leverage here, not strangers to be welcomed, fed and watered.
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,”
Matthew 25:35
“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”
Hebrews 13:2
(yeah, I’m not exactly what you’d call religious, but parts are still some pretty decent literature)
Awe, now your just trying to confuse them. They know them brown people is terrorists!
Basically saying, “Whatever.”
OT a bit…I heard about another story involving Indiana on NPR today intersecting religion and concern for those in need, specifically the homeless. Too bad the sculpture by the Methodist Church there didn’t use the money that it took to make this sculpture and just give it to the poor and homeless. But in any case, it makes a powerful statement that I think a lot of people can and do appreciate.
Seems to me that Joseph and the BVM could be considered refugees as they were forced to travel far from their home in Nazareth to Bethlehem to register for the Roman census.
Ancestors on both my Mother’s and Dad’s side came to the US as refugees to escape political and religious persecution. Glad they were accepted, otherwise I would not be available to write this comment.
Since most of Gov. Pence’s supporters do not consider Catholics as Christians, the group just has to fall in line, I guess…
