When I was a teacher in the 90s, I chaperoned our middle school students to the nearby Episcopal retreat Camp Waycross, and this is the church we would attend while there. Completely horrible, but also not surprising. Indiana never let go of the Klan since DC Stephenson’s days in the 1920s. I think it hurts even more knowing the actual building.
The bigots may be awakening a giant they will wish they hadn’t. All things like this will do is enrage members of mainstream congregations. Members of the mainstream congregations have, collectively, influence far outweighing their raw numbers. Things like this are what will get the mainstream congregants to stand up and be counted.
And, before anyone denounces organized religion, please save that for a more appropriate occasion. Remember that it was members of the liberal wings of Protestantism, Judaism and Catholicism who marched in support of civil rights in the 60s. The same religious groups marched against the war in Vietnam, and worked, unsuccessfully, for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
It’s a badge and it will force folks to pick a side.
