Hmm all kinds of hinky going on here. What if I don’t like the federal candidates but care more about local officials? How easy is to vote absentee in these states? How easy is it to change one’s registration in these states? How long before an election does one have to change their address? Are they going to require that when some one dies the family has to notify the election’s board? What proof will they need to show.
I get the feeling that some political party is concerned about changing demographics.
These people aren’t being banned for life, they’re just being asked to confirm their eligibility. It’s not a bad heuristic to assume that someone who hasn’t voted in three elections in a row is no longer living in the district, or living at all. The notion that voting for political office is something that people should be able to do at the spur of the moment, without any thought or preparation ahead of time, is not a terribly appealing one. Democratic activism about this just plays into the notion that their voters are lazy and ignorant, if not actually fraudulent.
A better tack is to put boots on the ground, use information systems to find voters likely to be on your side, and get them registered, get them to vote early if possible, and help get them to the polls on election day if not. Then, to the extent that these registration requirements actually impact voters, it would be the side that fails to do this effectively that loses out.
