Discussion: In Response To Orlando, Dem Senator Launches Talking Filibuster Over Guns

I have to say I haven’t been as proud since the day 7 Texas Democrats left the state for an undisclosed location to try to avoid having the electoral map Tom Delay drew rammed through the Texas lege.

Is Bob Casey speaking now?

Yes. Very effective speech, at least to me.

HOLY SH*T!

I called Senator Casey’s office this afternoon and just checked back to see how the filibuster is going and he’s actually filibustering RIGHT NOW!

Okay, perhaps I can’t take full credit but I’m truly shocked, and very pleased, because I would have bet my car title that he wouldn’t participate tonight.

Allow me to take my victory lap…

LOL – I hope that’s not the car we’re going to high-tail it to California in, in a couple years! :hushed:

ETA: You most certainly deserve a jig!

Well, someone was claiming before that Hillary was a terrible speaker.

Heh.

Edited to add: Don’t shoot the messenger.

LOL. I like his words, but he does ramble, doesn’t he?

Of course not, beattycat - we’ll need to git us a real jalopy a la “Beverly Hillbillies” to do that trip right! You can ride in the rocking chair up on top…

Of course! – That’s the best seat. :sunglasses:

chelsea530, if his last name wasn’t “Casey”, he would no doubt be a modestly successful insurance salesman somewhere in Pennsylvania today…

As I stated above, I still haven’t forgiven him for his stem cell research stance which was to deny the single vote that would have overridden W’s veto. I’m happy to see him join this filibuster, tho

Okay, Bob. You’ve got to connect the dots. And you’re doing that somewhat.

It’s unsurprising that these people have rarely been put on the spot like this, on an issue that is important as this.

A learning experience, I pray.

Okay, folks, I’m off to bed. This heat we’re experiencing in Central Virginia is sapping my energy, dang it. Air conditioning helps but doesn’t do it all – plus, I really hate using AC all the frickin’ time, drying out your skin and nose, etc. Oh, well. Older age sucks sometimes.

Humility, it’s a thing ; )

Nobody is more humble than I am - I’m the best at being humble. People are saying… they’re calling and sending me letters, you wouldn’t believe it - the things they’re saying about how tremendously humble I am - it’s incredible!

(I have got to stop listening to Trump… it’s warping my mind)

Tru dat!
besides humility is for people that aren’t able to realize their own awesomeness like we awesomites.

Let’s get Hillary a Congress which will pass the needed legislation.

No.

No. Seriously.

First off, I’ll admit I just think the idea itself is wrong and wrong-headed, my personal opinion.

However, much more importantly, it’s a truly horrible idea or position strategically.

Start with, there is a very large segment of registered Democrats that are also gun owners and would never agree with this idea. Introducing this position would alienate a large segment of them if not nearly all of them. You will not get them on board with this idea any time soon, if ever, and it will cause some pretty hideous internal conflict in the Democratic party that we can ill-afford. Especially not in the current election cycle.

Trying to suddenly inject this into the current election politics of the 2016 election cycle is a sure-fired way of opening up a civil war within the party, and it will accomplish a whole lot less than zero for this November election.

Add to that, this election in particular, the Democratic party is working hard an has an historic chance to bring in a huge segment of the independent and moderate electorate, a large swath of who are much more conservative and conservative-leaning than even the gun owners who are registered Democrats.

Throwing this discussion into the current election politics will drive a significant wedge into that effort and send a very large chunk, if not an overwhelming majority, of those potential Democratic voters away from the party.

Keeping our eye on the ball for 2016, but also 2018 and 2020, we need to bring these voters in and also get them to turn out in those election years. It’s not just about the Presidential election. We critically need these people to participate on all the down ticket elections. It’s not even just the Senate and the House elections … it’s even more critical that we take back the governor mansions and increase out footprint in the various State legislatures.

This is an absolutely horrible time to inject the topic of a Constitutional Amendment to repeal another Constitutional Amendment. And, most certainly, an attempt to repeal the Second Amendment will be every bit as controversial as attempting to repeal the First Amendment.

Take a moment to contemplate that. What would the political conversation look like if either party said “I do think it is time to start bending the conversation toward repeal of the First Amendment.” Really wrap your head around that and imagine it in detail for a few minutes. Just try to imagine the chaos within the Democratic party if we did it, let alone what a weapon it would be against us from people outside the party. We would be getting hammered by both people who agreed with that idea as well as people who opposed it, let alone the organized party attacks and disruption.

Now imagine what we, as Democrats, would do to the Republican party if they tried to repeal the First Amendment.

All those scenarios are exactly what we will face if we are stupid enough to try and make repealing the Second Amendment part of the current political discussion. And by current, 2016 is absolutely about the worst timing ever in political history to try it, but the ramifications into 2018 and 2020 would be every bit as devastating.

So, NO. It’s a perfectly horrible idea. Forget about it. Other, much more sane, options need to be explored.

Big deal. A lot of us do. That doesn’t give you any sort of superior position with this Really Bad Idea.

I’m not sure if you got the idea from this article or not, but this is why the topic suddenly appeared in the political discussion this week:

And, Cohen is dead wrong in that opinion piece. He makes a horrible case that’s easily destroyed, and right now the right wing would love nothing more than for Democrats to jump on the idea and embrace it. It’s so ill-conceived and flawed that my first reaction to it when I read it a cople days ago was that it’s a planted false flag operation by the right wing designed to fragment the Democratic party.

The fact that it is now showing up in online discussions only increases that feeling.

But isn’t it to soon to have this discussion??? So soon after this tragic event? Don’t we have to wait for the right time…?

Somebody mentioned TC’s use of Green Eggs and Ham in his filibuster…those doing this filibuster would do better to use one of Dr. Seuss’ political cartoons from WWII. Simply substitute “domestic gun deaths” for “Hitler,” and this cartoon seems quite applicable:

While I agree with you that “innocents” was the proper term in the intended sentence, it could probably work with “innocence” as well. Think of the Don Henley song “The End of the Innocence” – if it can end, it can probably also be slaughtered.
