…applause…
I can hardly believe it.
Why isn’t Sanders there? Wait, - don’t tell me…He’ll need guns for his revolution.
I have my own ideas on why.
I think Trump has something to do with it. He’s forcing the GOP to either move left and be reasonable or be marked forever with his stain. That’s one thing.
I also think it has to do with the shooter. The Newtown shooter was so clearly out of his mind that it was hard to make him into a centerpiece for common sense.
The Orlando shooter was clearly motivated by hate - it was a straight up hate crime, so that gives the GOP cover, but even more so that he was Muslim. Unfortunately - but I’ll take whatever works right now.
And don’t ask me why the Muslim couple in California didn’t have the affect Orlando is having - but that was pre-Trump.
So does this mean Trump and NRA think something might actually happen this time and are trying to get ahead of change. Got to keep the Democrats from getting credit. From the NYT (my bold):
“I will be meeting with the N.R.A., who has endorsed me, about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no-fly list, to buy guns,” Mr. Trump wrote Wednesday morning. The N.R.A. said it would be happy to meet with Mr. Trump in a Twitter post of its own.
From the NRA: Happy to meet @realdonaldtrump. Our position is no guns for terrorists—period. Due process & right to self-defense for law-abiding Americans
Anyone willing to take bets on a) whether this gets any airplay on the nightly news and, if a) then b) how ot os presented as an affront to American sensibilities or as a ‘there you go again’ moment or as a deterrent with respect to the bill in question, e.g., how irresponsible and obstructive the Dems are being?
How much airplay, in contrast, will DT’s Apocalypse Now speech get and some other press credentials being removed?
My bet is the filibuster is completely ignored or denigrated as a waste of time and Donny leads, first story.
not sure what repeal of the 2A would do especially with over 40 states with state provisions
There are lots of regulations - even probably banning AR-15s for personal use – that can be allowed now.
Currently most news sites are reporting on Trump and NRA meeting to discuss their position on legislation that would prevent those on the terrorist watch list from being able to buy guns. Only a few mention the fillibuster by Democrats. I bet republicans get credit for any change to the law.
Good time to just cite the statistics. In all likelihood, several more people will die during the filibuster as they do.
It has to be, out of sight-out of mind as the excuse for people not being up in arms, no pun intended, regarding the daily and yearly slaughter of or our own friends and neighbors.
There used to be a national debt counter and there have been doomsday clocks, we need a death by gun running total that is placed behind every screen and at every speech. Not only would the unbelievable death toll have to be recognized but the on-going, as we speak, active slaughter would be undeniable.
The NRA quashes the studies and suppresses the information. So this would just be fighting fire with fire.
Someone should also call up Ted Nugent and ask him if he thinks people on the no-fly list should have guns.
Finally! An actual filibuster about a real issue!
Been talking about this all day, recruiting anti-NRA voters for the fall.
I’ve got two so far.
“Referencing Murphy’s filibuster, an aide to McConnell told TPM ‘the only thing he’s blocking is any effort to vote on the amendments he says he wants.’”
I respectfully disagree. Dems are getting good press coverage from this and they are finally showing that they are willing to publicly oppose Republicans’ thugishness and intransigence on this issue. It’s heartening to know that the whole Senate has not been bought off by the NRA and their filthy blood money. My day will be complete if somebody sends bags of marzipan dicks to Mitch McConnell’s and Wayne LaPierre’s offices.
Count on it. They control the spin, but that’s okay.
The point is, if they cave once, that’s just means we can get them to cave again and again.
Radicalization goes two ways : - )

I think it is great that the Democrats are using the Filibuster. McConnell attended the initially secret meeting of GOP congressmen on Obama’s inauguration night where they played this clip from The Town to begin the meeting. We’re gonna hurt some people They decided that the Legislative agenda would not be to renew the crumbling infrastructure and electrical grid of the country (that might create jobs and improve employment numbers for Obama), but to obstruct in every way they could to make Obama a single term president. McConnell deployed the Filibuster 450 times before they won the Senate majority in 2014, The Merrick Garland stonewall is a Filibuster by another name.
Perfect, succinct.
I’m asking permission to use.
Kewl!
But sometimes that’s the only way to force everyone to take a bath.
