Discussion: In A Major Reversal, Rand Paul Pushes For Higher Defense Spending

Discussion for article #234729

Jesus. Here we go again. Strident demands for increased spending on defense by the nation that spends the most on defenseā€“by farā€“of any nation on Earth by people who count PNAC sociopath neocons among their closest advisors. Just like 2000.

And yet, no one in the MSM will draw the obvious conclusion that these always-wrong assholes are yet again planning to start another war as soon as they can and leaving no doubts about the target.

Forget the flip-flopping label. Both he and Jeb contradict themselves daily in terms of their positions.

The amendment, filed without public notice and first reported by Time, is the latest of several moves by the Kentucky senator seemingly aimed at placating the GOPā€™s ascendant hawkish wing ahead of a reported campaign announcement next month.

What!? A Libertarian/Republican abandoning principle for expediency and personal gain? Say it ainā€™t so?

I know. Who woulda thought? Itā€™s so contrary to their otherwise principled positions.

Not sure here, Steve. Whatā€™s so troubling about this is not that Rand is just another war monger. He has steadfastly advocated the US to, in Washingtonā€™s words, ā€œsteer clear of foreign entanglementsā€. Whatā€™s troubling about this is that ā€“ as with so many politicians ā€“ heā€™s prepared to jettison that principled position in the illusory hope that people will forget what he said last week. To his supporters, that will be very disillusioning.

I question whether Ayn-Boy has ever taken a ā€œprincipled positionā€ on anything, given that, like the LaRouchies they resemble in so many ways, itā€™s never clear to me where the line between grifting and principle was here.

But oh ye of little faith. As if thereā€™s any change in position the Paultards canā€™t rationalize away or ignore as long as he holds fast on ā€œauditing the Fedā€ (whatever the hell that means), weeeeeed and goooooold.

Letā€™s repeat this one more time: Rand Paul (and his father) are not, and never were, libertarians. They were, and still are, Republican grifters, so letā€™s please stop mentioning Rand Paul is a libertarian, libertarian light or anything else but what he is : a con man who will say anything and everything to get ā€œdonationsā€.

That made my weekā€¦

That there is a possibility that this smarmy, homespun prevaricator can make his legions of suckers for the libertarian shape-shift ā€œdisillusionedā€ this early in the campaign.

Paulā€™s amendment would boost military spending by about $190 billion

Yes, but each soldier can spend the money as they please.

Itā€™s deja vu all over again as republican candidates creep to the right.

Wasnā€™t there a meeting with Adelson recently?

^This.

This is purely a panderā€¦because in order to be the Republican nominee (which Rand Paul canā€™t be), you have to promise that you will spend more money on defense, regardless of how much already spend on defense.

To watch someone compromise on their most highly-held principle (as little intervention by the government as humanly possible) is actually sad. It would be better if he had an honest change of heart. It would be understandable if he had a compromise on a minor position. But the reduction of government both here and abroad is this guyā€™s foundation principle, and that of his father before him.

once again, scratch a libertarian and not very far under the surface thereā€™s a hawkish Republican

many libertarians lurrrrrrved themselves Bushā€™s Iraq war and stuck by it right along with the hardcore Republicans

what is seldom mentioned when most folks talk about how much more the US spends on its military compared to other nations, is that most of the non-US top spenders are either NATO allies or US-friendly nations.

Rand Paul (and his father) are not, and never were, libertarians. They were, and still are, Republican grifters,

Who said libertarian and grifter are mutually exclusive? However, Ron stuck to his positions more even when they werenā€™t popular within the party. Heā€™s batshit crazy, but I get the impression he believed some of what he was saying. On the flip side, Iā€™m not sure that Rand can even dress himself without conducting a straw poll.

Donā€™t forget the corollary that none of the additional spending should go to soldiers or veterans unless there is an opportunity to embarrass a democratic president.

Rand, aka Senator Aqua Buddha, has been courting the ā€˜libertariansā€™ in Silicon Valley for their big bucks and influence. He forgets that there are such things as the Internets, where most things he has reversed himself on will bite him in his stupid pandering buttā€¦

ā€œā€¦offset with steep cuts to domestic federal programsā€¦ā€

Why waste taxpayerā€™s money on things for Americans, when you can waste taxpayer money on things for foreigners.
