From the Detroit News article:

The proposal would create a 13-member redistricting commission that would be composed of four Democrats, four Republicans and five independent members who vow they are not affiliated with any major political party. The secretary of state would select the commission members.

That’s not a narrow administrative capacity. That is, as they say, the whole ball of wax. I know one thing for certain, Republicans don’t look at it that way, nor should any true blue Democrat.

It’s a valid concern as the Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission case approving independent commissions is pretty recent (2015) and Roberts hated it. Hopefully it won’t come to that, or if it does stare decisis and maybe a good bounce or two would save the day…

Read the proposal. The SOS simply administers the random selection process and has no say regarding who the individual commissioners are. The Detroit News has this wrong - probably on purpose since it’s a Republican-leaning (ahem) publication.

Thanks for the clarification; I should have known that. The Rethugs will find some way to turn this in to a “federal case.”
