Discussion: Hurricane Florence Wreaks Havoc As It Pummels North Carolina

My wife’s mom evacuated from Surf City on Topsail Island, just north of Wilmington, which is right now being blown around and drenched by Florence. We also own a house there with her sisters. Won’t know what the damage is for several days, but at least my MIL is safely ensconced in her Wilmington condo on high group with two stories above her. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I’ll hope for safety for your family members. Just saw General Honore interviewed again. The water is rising so fast that they are not waiting for calls, but are instead sending raised vehicles in to rescue people who may be on their roofs by later today or tomorrow. This is the military at its best - organized, efficient, brave in their operations. We always speculate about those who don’t evacuate but some people have no resources, have a sick family member they’re afraid to move, or have other good reasons to explain their decision. Yesterday another commentator reminded me that, in Trump’s America, immigrants are also afraid to go to central locations or shelters because they assume there will be ICE agents ready to round them up.

I’m hoping my MIL’s condo is high enough ground to avoid the flooding, but I guess we’ll see.
