If you’ve never seen Ken Burns documentary “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” I highly recommend it. In one of the episodes they discuss the fact it took years to wrench the Grand Canyon away from a scheming businessman who’d laid claim to strategic sections and started charging people tolls. I can’t remember the guys name but he didn’t give up, he went on to become a Congressman or Senator, I can’t remember which, from Arizona.
