Southwest Key’s publicly available tax-return forms show its total income was $96 million in fiscal 2013. By fiscal 2016, revenues had grown to $242 million. Now, the government is paying the organization $458 million.

… … …

As Southwest Key’s revenue has grown, so has compensation for Chief Executive Juan Sanchez.

Sanchez’s compensation has nearly doubled since 2016, according to the organization.

In 2017, Sanchez had a base pay of $889,360, additional pay of $21,000 and $566,371 in retirement compensation. The total package: $1.47 million.

Well it’s good to see the state of Arizona step up and make sure that Southwest Key is fulfilling their requirements. But what struck me is that the state of Texas and California is not having the same problems that Arizona is experiencing. Are AZ’s inspections more thorough?

And I wonder when these contracts were made with Southwest Key did HHS rely on the states to conduct their inspections? Did the states pass on their inspections to HHS?

And this Matthew Albence is name to keep track of. If removing the children’s parent means that the children are kept in shelters instead of homes then this is contributing the harm to these children.

So that whole tax cut trickle down thingy is working great for Sanchez. I wonder what the starting pay is for staff. I wonder how much they pay staff who speak not only Spanish but some of the other native languages of Central America?

Lock. Them. Up. I’m pretty sure the state has some options they’re not using, because those options might make the state directly responsible for the mess instead of maintaining plausible deniability.

Southwest Key is suing the City of Houston because the city won’t grant permits for a new shelter over proper permitting… and the City is also looking at revoking improper permits for its other Houston-based facilities.

They hide behind their “non-profit” status and their relationship with DHS & ICE to try and bully local officials into overlooking compliance issues.

In a slightly off-topic, just got an email providing instructions for those of us at work how to comply with ICE officials who are apparently now “dropping by” to interview contractors here on HB1 visas… and not just the contract people - but also coworkers and supervisors. They’re not going through HR or even making appointments thru Security… just showing up. It’s really rattled one of my workers who’s set to take her annual vacation leave to travel back to India for three weeks as she’s afraid she won’t be allowed back in (even though all her paperwork is up to date).

Has she left instructions with some one here if she has problems? Things like a key to her apartment, the name & number of her immigration lawyer, or any lawyer for that matter? Copies of her documents. I wish her safe travels and most importantly a safe return.
