Discussion for article #236233
In the near future contraception will take forms that are very cheap, very accessible, long lasting and with few side effects. Implants, temporary tubal ligations, even advances for men in the same vein. Then Christianists will have to forge ahead with laws exposing their true agenda, making recreational sex somehow illegal or difficult to enjoy. They hate sex. At least sex for women that is. They want women to have sex at the behest and pleasure of the men controlling it. And if a man decides any woman should be deprived of safe sex free of the risk of pregnancy they don’t want her having avenues to override that decision.
Huckabee performs three simultaneous functions:
- He whips up the “faithful” mouth-breathers to get them to the polls.
- He provides “contrast” to Jeb Bush/Scott Walker by making them look “normal” in comparison to his rantings.
- He lays the groundwork for further “grifting” and money-grubbing for like-minded Theocrats and nudges the idea of a Theocracy further towards the realm of possibility.
Maddow said last night there has been 37 new anti-abortion laws passed so far in 2015. Culture wars over? My ass.
It appears that "Christians " are constantly at “war” with someone or something…Culture, children, muslims, witches, heretics, non believers, governments, the medical community…seems very un Christ- like
Michaelangelo Signorile has done a good job of showing how things aren’t over in the culture wars in his aptly named book “It’s Not Over”. By assuming the culture wars have ended, people on the Left leave themselves open to new fronts like “religious freedom”. The utter failure of abortion advocates to get beyond the defensive (and their abject failure in seeing how teh goal posts have been moved) is one very good and continuing example of this.
i am undecided on huckabee. is he actually crazy enough to think he can get the nomination? or is he just amazingly adept when it comes to his grifting, money-making enterprise? tough call.
Agreed. I can’t remember if the article was here or on salon, but there was a good one about hucksterbee when the whole sandra fluke debate was going on a few years ago. There’s an existential gulf between these christianists’ and liberals’ views on the immorality of sex in american life. These religious pols and their minions just profoundly believe that sex is bad, dirty, wrong, and that facilitating contraceptives are enabling a moral hazard.
It’s the latter and eventually the rest of the crowd vying for the nomination will start hammering him on his many con games including cinnamon based diabetes cures, use of public funds on himself while was he was governor, etc., if they see him moving ahead.
My question on Huckabee is where does he stand on raising the minimum wage.
But before getting to that, if the culture wars end then on what issue do the culture warriors vote?
Or to put another way, the GOP cannot allow the culture wars to end or most of its voters become economic voters or as they are usually known, Democrats. I mean upwards of 20,000,000 benefit from Obamacare compared to 20 people who benefit for tax cuts for billionaires. The largest single group to benefit from Obamacare, about 10,000,000 people are White people with a high school diploma or less living disproportionally in the South or as other call them, the GOP base. That is it is God, Guns, Gays, RACE (above all) and abortion that cause these people to vote Republican.
It the GOP loses its cultural warriors it is left with the 1%ers who make up about 1%. Even with billions the GOP cannot win the presidency representing 1% of the people. Hence for the GOP to remain relevant it is dependent on its culture warriors.
But fear not, remember the most pro abortion president ever, (the first governor in the nation to sign a bill legalizing aborition and to this day the most premissive bill ever signed by any governor on the subject and as president appointed people to the Supreme Court to make sure abortion would stay legal and followed policies that directly resulted in a huge increase in abortions) was Ronald Reagan.
In spite of being the most pro abortion candidate ever to run let alone win the presidency, Reagan to this day is adored by the cutlure warriors. Or to put another way, for most of the GOP culture warriors abortion is the excuse (why we say what we do) for being culture warriors it is not the reason (why we do what we do) for being culture warriors.
The real danger to the GOP and why he is getting panned by the so called mainstream media is Rick Santorum. Santorum is for raising the minimum wage. That is while Santorum like Huckabee and others is from the "God, Guns, Gays, Race (above all) and Abortion wing of the party, in Santorum’s case Race is not above all and in fact hardly part of Santorum. By favoring a raise in the minimum wage and other pro working class views, Santorum is endangering the link in the minds of many culture warriors and White Obamacare beneficiaries between Class and Race.
Because if you break the link between Class and Race in the minds of many “Culture Warriors”, you break the GOP.
So I iterate, where does Huckabee stand on raising the minimum wage? While he says he would support so long as billionaires are handed the key to the treasury and all regulations on labor are overturned, in fact he is as big an opponent on raising the minimum wage as he can be.
the culture wars over??? naw as long as there’s money to be made and people to control it wont be over… and ya can rely on anything for a buck huck to exemplify that
If a website like HuffPo can be- rightfully- dismissed as just a news aggregator, shouldn’t there be a similarly derogatory term for columnists who can write copy in a twenty minute Google and type session in Starbucks?
“Fringe Festival”"
Contrast this with some real writing on Huckabee from Timothy Egan-remember that name- in the Times:
