“That was true discrimination and it was horrible,” he added.
The fact that Governor Huckabee thinks Civil Rights are limited to African-Americans shows what a bigot he is: both against African-Americans, and gays.
“true discrimination…”
Now a white ex-governor from a Southern state is going to tell all of us what ‘discrimination’ is?
I can’t wait to see Huckabee’s Simpson’s impression video…
(They’re all doing one, right?)
The outreach effort is working, GOP. Please continue.
Mike is dense. Civil rights don’t apply to just black folks. You’d think he would be aware of that considering the laws plainly include other groups.
Rights apply to EVERYONE or no one.
Yeah, but don’t forget there are still a lot of voters out there that agree with this stupidity.
They forget, as Ghost reminds us, about the abuse the LGBTQ community has had to survive, beginning with Stonewall.
“First of all, what an insult to African Americans… who were truly discriminated against …" Huckabee said.
Yeah, the LGBT community doen't really know what it's like to be discriminated against. Uh huh.........
“First of all, what an insult to African Americans, who were hosed in the street, who were beaten, who were truly discriminated against with separate restrooms, separate drinking fountains, separate entrances," Huckabee said.
Sir, it’s separation of Church and State … what part needs to be explained to you?
Invisibility mustn’t count…
Huckabee was a governor but currently hold no elective office so he as no power over anyone. He’s an asshat, elected or not.
What an imbecile. Everyone has civil rights, not just black people. He’s clearly confused as to the basic meanings of words. And the thing is, I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t really believe what he was saying and was just trying to get attention. But just like Ted Cruz, the problem is that he’s not nearly as smart a huckster as he imagines and he just ends up looking like a fool.
They’re like the geeks in middle school who act obnoxious to get attention, unaware that nobody cares whether or not it’s an act, since it’s still obnoxious either way. But thus is the way in the modern Republican Party. The only way to cozy up in the primary is to burn all your bridges with everyone else.
Mad Squirrel Disease…
How far does Huckabee have to get in the mud before we can call him a pig?
This is one of those instances where I’m talking about social power structures. Being a man in our society puts you into a certain set of power structures which elevates one above being female. Being Christian elevates one above non-Christians, and so forth…basically, being a wealthy, white, cis-het Christian man puts people like Huckabee into a certain class of people who hold a large amount of social power. Most people talk about it as 'privilege, which I disagree with as a descriptor, but the power structures are there.
Basically, I was saying that Huckabee was talking down to African-Americans.
There is-Republican.
First of all, what an insult to African Americans,
First of all, don’t fucking tell me what’s insulting to me. You don’t get to do that. Secondly, what has been incredibly offensive to African Americans is the way you and your ilk have viciously, ceaselessly denigrated and demonized the current president, the first black president. If you actually gave a good damn about what offends black folk you’d at least pretend to have a modicum of respect for the first black president, but you don’t even pretend to because offending black folks has been your stock in trade for the past seven years.
“That was true discrimination and it was horrible,” he added. "It’s hard to say that the redefinition of marriage is on the same basis as was racial discrimination throughout our history.”
Oh, you mean, when marriage was redefined as being a union of two people as opposed to the old definition of marriage being a union of two people of the same race. Right, that doesn’t count.
Calling Huckabee a Christian minister is an insult to Christians everywhere.
He is the GOP. Digest that.
Calling Huckabee a Christian is an insult to Christians. (haven’t we all thought this, for quite a while?)
“First of all, what an insult to African Americans, who were hosed in the street, who were beaten, who were truly discriminated against with separate restrooms, separate drinking fountains, separate entrances,"
Says the white evangelical southern preacher. Can anyone guess which side of the hose Huck would be on if he were a man of consequence during the struggle for Civil Rights? He’d have relied on “The Good Book” to guide him back then just as does today.
