Discussion: How We Disrespect Servicewomen

Discussion for article #230168

The IUD is first-line contraception and one should be offered freely to every female recruit. Hormonal contraceptives should also be freely available for all servicewomen who might choose them to regulate their menses, reduce acne or other medical benefits of the hormones. Plan B is available without a prescription and should be stocked in every commissary.

Of course surgical abortions should be readily available too, for the occasional medical necessity. But honestly. I don’t morally object to elective abortions for birth control, but they are still the costliest, most wasteful method of contraception available. I’d like to see wider availability of the cost-effective methods.

How We Disrespect Women would be a much longer discussion.

What’s going on the military is an extension of what goes on in most states in the country: women have to travel long distances, often out of state, to find clinics that do abortions; and employers frequently find a way around the law to discriminate against pregnant women. Woman hating under the guise of “protecting the family” is a central pillar of politics and social policy in the U.S., as well as that of some religions.
