Discussion: How These Former Obama Voters Came To See Trump As Their Champion

Anyone who says they voted twice for Obama but now supports Drumpf is lying.

On the day after a most historic moment – where a major political party nominated a woman named Hillary Clinton – why on earth is this article about some disaffected white supremacist dead-enders front & center? The author states upfront “Though these voters make up a tiny fraction of the electorate”, yet TPM puts it center stage… SMH.

No. All points can be plotted on the Bell Curve

Plus, a “Karl North” who claims to be from Houston has the Twitter handle “TxAltReich” – and, yep, it’s exactly what you’d expect. I’m gonna say that if it’s the same guy he wasn’t ever in the market for an African-American Democratic President.

I would have to agree, daveislib. Sounds more like a meme devised to make people think that they’d swung far in the other direction because of their attraction to Trump rather than admit that they were sporatic GOP voters when they bothered to show up at all.

I hope Allegra’s wrong about the 8-15% of Obama voters going for Trump now, though, and I hope that disaffected Republicans and R-leaning Indies can find their way to vote for Hillary. I’ve spoken to at least a few - mostly women - but I suspect there are more out there!

Though these voters make up a tiny fraction of the electorate, . . .

I guess so, if you ignore the last 100 years or so of presidential elections.

Neither the Dems nor the GOP can claim more than roughly 30 % each of voters to consistently support their candidates. It’s the remaining 40%, the “independents” (aka one issue voters or people with no coherent political philosophy) who pretty much swing from party to party every 4 years, particularly if the sitting president seeking re-election is particularly bad or unpopular (think Carter and Bush the Elder) who always decide elections. About the only exception to this rule have been Reagan and Bush the Lesser, who both stumbled badly in their first terms but were somehow reelected.

Obama was, narrowly, elected in 2008 (had McCain picked a better running mate I’m convinced he would have won) not because the country was suddenly more sensible and liberal, but because enough independents had had it with the GOP and didn’t think McCain and, especially, Palin were a better choice.

Obama secured his second term by again convincing enough independents that he was rebuilding the country after the Great Recession and because he wasn’t obsessed with terror threats and miring us further in Iraq.

This election too will be decided by “independents,” but inexplicably, there have been a lot of long time Dems (think Rust Belt blue collar) who have defected to Trump, though I’m not sure anyone who has is really a Dem. So, if the polls are correct and we have pretty much a dead heat right now, the winner is the candidate who not only needs to convince enough “independents,” but will need to get enough votes of the other party’s heretofore but now disaffected loyalists (I’m thinking there are more establishment GOP supporters than disgruntled Dems) and enough of Sanders’ supporters, many of whom are political neophytes, head-in-the-clouds idealists or too pure to do the right thing.

Anyone claiming to have voted for Obama but will now be voting for Trump can only be described as too stupid to be participating. It’s like contending that you once liked traffic lights but no longer see their value, but that’s exactly what will happen to one degree or another.

But she’s not. That’s the way it goes in every presidential election. 51% of Americans are neither Dem nor GOP. Independents always determine the outcome.

In Obama’s favor, Shrub had fucked-up so badly that a certain portion of independents wouldn’t have voted GOP in 2008 even if they had reanimated Ronnie. McCain was a horrible candidate made all the more unappealing by his choice of Palin. However, a lot of independents believe a lot of the scurrilous nonsense that the right has been trying to pin on HRC for the last two decades and this is enough for them. Further, If they are that part of the electorate that sees all career politicians in the same light, a certain percentage will vote for Trump just because he’s not a politician.

I’m sorry, these so call “formerly Obama voters” are a herd of fake people!

Furthermore, how does one go from an IT Project Manager to a part time receptionist?

Because she was too incompetent?

No.

The British are proud. The Italians are proud. The French are proud. Swiss, Greeks, Germans. The Scots get a little too proud (kidding). If you believe one race (any race) is superior to another race, then you are a supremacist.

And you are ignorant, especially if the only language you speak is half-assed English.

Perhaps but that wouldn’t explain any of these people voting for Obama again in 2012. By that point, the teabaggers had launched their anti-government movement and plenty of Indies were against the ACA. If they had what would become Trump-leaning inclinations, they would have jumped on the anti-Obama wagon.

No, I stand by my original thoughts that these were not two-time Obama voters but that is just my humble opinion.

Thank you TPM.

When you publish bullshit articles like these you remind me that, although you do attempt to be fair and responsible in your reporting. You are no better than the rest.
On the day after a great DNC, when Hillary Clinton did herself well in claiming and accepting her nomination. THIS story is part of your headlines.
Even worst, the inanity of the article makes it clear that this story was published for clicks.

Again, I thank you for reminding me that at this moment in this country there’s just about no one we can trust. All of YOU have a narrative that you push, however disingenuous said narrative is.

I just emailed TPM this same sentiment. I also noted that this article is from June 29th! I thought comments were closed because they wouldn’t work in Chrome. After a tip about this, switched browsers to read these.

Historic day, and TPM has a page full of TRUMP, TRUMP, TRUMP. I know we want to know what shit up to so we can be nonstop outraged, but not to the point of overshadowing the positive things going on with DNC. Very disappointed in TPM for following that media “get the most clicks” tactic.

Because Cruz hasn’t been returning Marshall’s desperate phone calls begging for an update on The Smartest Man In The Senate?

Fox not so News has infected them. Beak O Riley a carrion eater leads the way with his well fed slaves. Oh yes well fed and fresh sheets nice fresh sheets a mint on the pillow room service. Why do these slags worry about our sex lives? Because they don’t have any.

I think you make some good points, and I agree with a lot of them.

Personally, I’m running into nothing but Republicans who disavow Trump in no uncertain terms. Male Republicans may not vote for Mrs. Clinton, but Republican women will.

Further, I think the number of Republican men who don’t cast any presidential vote will be significant.

I disagree. I could totally see someone like that pushing for Obama so that he could get the fantasy race war he and his Paultard buddies have been spanking it to for the last 50 years.

Well TPM completely effed up-- with the comment link not working for hours too.
Lotta’ clicky-baity that got flushed too.

Where the idea of this article should have gone instead.
