Good story.
Instead, everyone is talking about how Hillary Clinton “rigged” the election according to Donna Brazille and Elizabeth Warren. What’s wrong with these people?
Bitter Bernie Bros.
I dunno. I think a reasonable person can be concerned about both stories.
Considering the fact that the nominee couldn´t beat the most unpopular candidate in US Presidential history, perhaps a little bit of Democratic Party self-reflection and criticism may be in order.
I always hover over unknown or strange emails in my personal account and it shows me who it’s really from and not the “user name” the phisherman has used. So similar to Jesus are the Russians phishers of men?
This is an incredible article. Fabulous work by Mr. Satter, Donn, and Day.
About halfway through I had this unsettling feeling, as if I was watching my own self read it. Reminded me of reading the Papadopoulos confession… four days ago? That cannot possibly be right.
edit to add: I cannot imagine trying to run a campaign, or be a cog in a campaign, with all of this hanging over my head. A campaign to save the nation from itself as you and your closest friends, really everybody you interact with in the 20hr/day you’re awake and working, have Vladimir’s sword over your head.
Democratic party members can have the conversation. Independents who tried to hijack the party apparatus can go suck eggs.
How´s that DNC fundraising going, asdt?
I´m a Democrat, but until I know that the DNC is no longer un-(D)emocratically picking our Party´s candidates before the voters get there, they can … go suck eggs.
…perhaps if the Bernie Bros. would actually join the party.
Excellent article. Well done Raphael, Jeff, and Chad! There is an enormous volume of details in there, most of which we knew about, but only in a very general sense. Knowing these details now makes them much more real, and MUCH more serious! This all-out blitz was in fact an all-out assault on the very democratic foundation of our country. This was an act of war.
Sad to say that our President is continuing to be an active participant in this war against the country he claims to serve.
These phishing attacks are only getting better, and our refusal to appropriate sufficient funds for cybersecurity means large swaths of the federal government (not to mention state governments) are easy targets.* Not only that, but we now have a president who is openly receptive to foreign meddling which might benefit him in the short term, even if it harms America in the long run.
*The hiring freezes and stagnant pay throughout the government aren’t helping, either. We need younger workers more familiar with these threats and the tech needed to prevent it.
I have no idea why, ten comments in, we already have Sanders people and Clinton people butting heads. Y’all, this is about democracy. This is about the Russians. Maybe that headbutting would fit better in the article about Brazile?
Please don´t get confused, but I´m a Democrat, and I supported Sanders. Most of his supporters were.
Lots of people here think the NYT is the enemy but on December 14 they ran the story I’ve linked to which in the print edition ran for five or six pages. I was apoplectic when I read it, and it contained much of the story today’s intrepid reporters have told us. Moron had already been elected, and it makes Comey and Lynch look like feckless enablers of him.
@erik_t We’ll keep at it until we decide the winner was indeed Clinton.
It’s really a lot worse than that. This isn’t like the back and forth of the age of the battleship, where you build a bigger gun and then I launch a ship with thicker armor and then you build a bigger-er gun etc etc. There’s no reason a priori to think that there can exist effective countermeasures to this sort of attack. It’s a fundamental alteration to the character of war, every bit as much as the nuclear weapon was, or the gun, or the saddle.
I’m shocked that Elizabeth Warren is a party to the phony “rigged” election story.
Wait until Pootie Poot decides to really sow more discord…
Hackers Compromised the Trump Organization 4 Years Ago—and the Company Never Noticed
The perpetrators have possible ties to Russia.

And it turns out some of those documents had been altered, because of course they were.
The bitterness and finger pointing caused by this election will be with us for years, if not decades. The goal of the Russians was to divide and weaken us-- and they succeeded beyond their wildest expectations. They succeeded largely because we were falling apart as a society already so we didn’t need much help.
It wasn’t as though the Russians poisoned our political well. What they did was more akin to giving an alcoholic a bottle of vodka and yelling chug, chug, chug. As more Americans wall themselves off into a cocoon of anger and conspiratorial delusion, we’ll be that much easier to manipulate.
