That seems to have been the policy of Hamas all along. Every attempt at a two state settlement has been accompanied by a surge in violence from Hamas designed to wreck it.
We are round about the time when Jews become a minority of the population within Israel. Since it is obvious Netanyahu is never going to allow an independent Palestinian state, the only other possible outcome is to give them voting rights.
And no, the fact that the ‘wrong’ ethnic group would win an election is not an argument against democracy.
This sadly won’t happen, as America has been part-and-parcel of the whole occupation. The U.S. has had almost 50 years to do this, and it hasn’t even tried.
There are two scenarios where I could see this happening:
Sanders Administration. Bernie’s voting record here is as bad as Clinton’s, but he was quite reasonable on this issue in the Eighties. His being Jewish gives him partial cover against the inevitable AIPAC charges of anti-Judaism, but only partial since it makes those charges about pretty much everyone who runs afoul of it.
The Republicans winning. At this point, lame duck Obama could give the ultimate “fuck you” and recognize Palestine as a state. This would make foreign policy for the incoming Rethuglican tough, since if he un-recognizes Palestine as a state, he’ll advertise his being a twit here to all other Western countries. They can take this thing unsaid, but if it’s blatant, their populations will cause a stir.
No, Sanders and Clinton are both AIPAC 110%-ers. Sanders is a committed Zionist. If he was elected, the Republicans would probably decide to cut off all support to Israel just to spite him.
The schism in the Democratic party is on age. The over-60s in the party leadership are uniformly committed to Zionism and believe Israel can do no wrong. The under 45s consider Israel to be a rogue state run by a cabal of Republican whack-jobs that insult the US at every opportunity. In 20 years time there will be none of the over 60s left in Congress and the Democratic party policy will be decided by people who don’t owe anything to AIPAC and consider Zionism to be a form of racism.
I don’t think Obama will recognize Palestine regardless of who gets elected. It would only cause a huge amount of bloodshed and it would be mostly the Palestinians being killed.
What I expect his parting fuck-you to Bibi and co will be is supporting a security council resolution to refer both sides to the ICC for their actions in the recent attacks on Gaza. Both sides are clearly guilty of war crimes. But the difference is that everyone knows that Hamas are terrorists and this is accepted. Most people don’t consider Netanyahu to be a terrorist but an ICC verdict could change that. It would also have the effect of strangling Israeli diplomatic efforts.
