Discussion: How Florida’s Puerto Rican Vote Is Changing Post-Hurricane Maria

Excellent point.

It really comes down to policies, and Republicans believe our role in their society is to work as much as the corporations want us to, for no benefits and as little as possible, because all the national wealth should be held by a handful of entitled billionaires until one of them figures out how to take it all.

If Puerto Ricans don’t like the way the government responded to the hurricane it should be obvious how to change it. If not, then don’t blame the government for ignoring Puerto Rico. If it’s citizens don’t care, why should the government?

This message to Puerto Ricans should be a no brainer for Nelson… “The Republicans let Puerto Rico suffer, and if you vote for Scott you keep Republicans in power. The end.”

As a Floridian, I have to say that Nelson needs to step up his game, especially in the Latino community. I cant stress this enough. Rick Scott and his band of miscreants have been courting the Latin vote and showing face in PR for a while now. Republicans have had a choke hold on this state for too long… Scott being re-elected as Gov was an absolute slap in the face and was largely carried by the old school Repub Cuban vote in Miami. Cant keep letting this f*cker get by. Step up your game, Nelson… and both you and Gillum can own these races! LETS GO, FLORIDA!!!

Democrats need to remind voters of what a terrible (to be nice) job the Republicans did in Puerto Rico last year.

And they need to keep asking Puerto Rican, and all Florida voters whether they want to be represented by a thief.

Yep, they are making it an easy point to make.

I understand computers are real good at morphing Scott’s face into a likeness of The Rump. Preferably one of the uglier instances of his hair attachment achieving lift-off. That should be the only negative ad needs running. The rest of the ads should be nothing but good ideas that 60% or more of people support, combined with turnout, turnout, get out the vote, and more turnout.

They also need positive messages about what they’re going to do. “Vote for us or the country gets it” only works for the republican base.

More evidence of how inexcusably feckless the DNC is. And in Wasserman-Schultz’s home state.

Wait now I’m confused. I thought owning races was a Republican talking point these days.

Voice over: Republican Scott supports this man who is no good in a hurricane.

Said as photo morphs into one of Trump with his hair lifting off.

The problem with this message is that Scott has made several trips to the island, and I’m sure he collected donations to hand out. He can do that as the Governor of Florida, whereas Nelson as a US Senator in the minority party doesn’t have that largess or time to keep flying to P.R.
For new to the mainland voter they have to be educated on the history of the parties, it can’t be as simple has your message suggests.

tRump’s continuing fictions may finally be helping to drive down his poll ratings. It gets harder and harder to ignore the gulf between him and reality.

But how do we show the “base” that their perceived view is also not reality?

I keep thinking about the tone on the commentary out there. I am seeing a shift from a veiled opinion over his mental state to a more specific and direct statement. The Woodward book seems to have turned on the tap coupled with his reaction to it. Woodward has pushed Trump over an edge. We always see him saying things that are beyond the pale, but this time around it is showing a diseased mind. There is only so much that people can take, including his own.

The article makes clear that it’s not just a question of caring, but of competing concerns. While trying to reestablish one’s family in a new community, secure housing, employment, schools, etc., it may be difficult to see that the Dems are your friends while the GOP is not. Their only experience with Federal elections is limited to the election of a Resident Commissioner to the house (non-voting, except in committees and procedural votes) and participation in the Presidential primary process at the party level. While loosely affiliated with our two parties, their parties have different names, identities and principles. A lot may get lost in translation, not to mention in the chaos of rebuilding your life.

And risk pissing off 1.2% of the “undecideds”?

It’s “bien cerquitas,” not “bien cirquitas.”
