Discussion: How Do You Solve A Problem Like An Underage Sexter?

Discussion for article #236839

How do you solve the problem of an underage sexter? I’d suggest mimicking the psychological shock treatment they use when they take troubled teens to the morgue or to a prison. Give them a glimpse of where their ā€œfun and gamesā€ will lead them.

Make them Josh Duggar’s foster children.

SCARED SEXTLESS! Would watch

Good article btw, not sure this sort of Dutch approach to parenting and the legal system will catch on here though. But thish ish how we do thish in cholland

We don’t do mild punishments and learning experiences here. Let me check the United States Play Book for Response to Teenagers…

Page 1. FREAK THE EVERMOTHERFUCK OUT!!! CALL THE POLICE!!! CHARGE FELONIES!!! BLAME EVERYONE!!!

Yep, But you’re reading from the United States Playbook for Response to African American Teenagers. See ā€œ19 Kids and Countingā€ for the United States Playbook Response for White Evangelical Christian Teenagers.

America, either we nuke you (literally, or, figuratively with the law) or you’re in the clear. If there was a middle ground, no one would ever be scared!

How about being a parent and canceling the phone contract for a month at a time. A little bit of cultural isolation will give your child plenty of time to think about their behavior. This has worked in our household.

A squirt of superglue into each mitten

Ooops,

@MorrisMeyer has a better idea.

The article completely misses the point of implied consent. Were the girls coerced into taking the pics? Were they coerced into mailing them around? If not, then I see no crime here. These are growing pains of the modern world, from the perspective of both sexes. Growing up is a complex dance of self respect, common sense, needing to be needed, and it’s always been that way. Cell phones might be new(ish), but the human foibles they help amplify are age-old.

My thought precisely!!!

Lol! It’s like the difference between the McCain solution and the Obama solution to a foreign policy problem.

Well, okay, McCain’s solution would be to superglue an M-80 into each hand and light it, but you know what I mean.

I’d like to just progress where there’s real sex education in our schools overall that includes a good dose of acceptance of sexuality. Hell, in the US, we’re just now talking about ā€˜Slut Shaming’ for women when men who display themselves as sex drives with legs are held on high.

I do wonder what kind of messaging the girls are being given about allowing(?) nude pictures of themselves to be taken on cell phones. This story is over a decade old and is easy to communicate… assuming the parents are willing to communicate.

I think the whole world of every age and gender could use a lesson how to behave in a world where everyone has a high definition video camera in their pocket. Basically a new golden rule for the digital age: do unto others as you would have your parent’s, teachers, pastor, friends, family, creepy guy outside the library, and future employers see you doing on YouTube.

Trigger warning, please. The feminism is kicking in my PTSD.

You missed the point.
There is no evidence that the girls were the ones ā€œpassing them around.ā€
The boys passed around and shared photos that the girls had given to individual boys they were involved with.

Your comment simply repeats the rationalizations that the article points out.
Just because a girl is a sexual being and shares her photo with a boy she is involved with DOES NOT MEAN she has put her sexuality and photos of herself into the public domain to be traded like baseball cards.

When a young woman shares intimacy with a chosen young man, that DOES NOT make her ā€œfair gameā€ and does not mean SHE is responsible for that young man’s betrayal and violation of her trust.

Stop with the slut-shaming bullshit.
We had this same argument yesterday with those who thought a medicine for women to help them with decreased arousal was problematic because it might supposedly be used as a ā€œdate-rape drug>ā€

Any time a woman dares to express normal sexuality, not only is society right there waiting to exploit her for it, not only is it right there waiting to excuse that exploitation - it’s right there to blame her for her own exploitation.

Sickening.

Shame on your parents for whatever the hell they did to make you the person you are.

Why is trouble with sexting always the girls’ fault? Did they wear too much make-up? Skirt slit too high? Just asking for it with that leopard skin print i-Phone case? Eve gets blamed for everything.

I have a cunning plan…

Take away their phones.
