Republicans War on Women .
Wow. What are we gonna do? Will they kidnap Obama so he can’t veto such a bill? Oh, right.
Why are we printing such hysteria?
“…Congress finds that uncontroverted scientific evidence has always shown that actual human life exists from the moment of conception…”
“Always” or at least for the 6,000 years the universe has existed.
200 - 300 years from now historians will look at the history of the United States and declare this a dark era - one when political imbeciles ignored issues critical to the fate of the world and instead chose to fixate on moralistically regulating the personal & private matters of the citizens.
Why didn’t the Republicans do this ten years ago, when they controlled both chambers of Congress and the White House? Or is this just something they pursue when the other guys have the presidency?
There’s one group of women who will always have access to abortion–mistresses to Republican Senators and Congressmen. And I’m sure ol’ Rep DesJarlais will see to that!
I’m just waiting for the logical extension of this Christianist ideology to miscarriages. If a two-day old zygote has the same fundamental Constitutional rights that a two-year old toddler does, then every miscarriage should be investigated by the legal and criminal justice system to make sure that the mother did not cause the miscarriage by intent or negligence.
If the Republicans do not introduce legislation to make this happen, then it’s proof that they don’t actually believe this life-begins-at-conception bullshit.
how will they get 60 votes in the senate for such things?
In some states they are already pursuing this avenue against women. I believe it is in Idaho that a woman who miscarried after either a beating or a fall (I forget which) was arrested for murder of her fetus when she miscarried and is facing up to 10 years in prison. They claim she deliberately brought on the miscarriage. The GOP and their Religious fanatical component are out to punish women for even existing I think as anything other than breeding cattle. All of these laws are an abomination and the fact that people who are old enough to remember what back alley abortions look like should be even considering them is unbelievable.
I grew up in the era of back alley and secret abortions. In fact, I helped a couple of friends in college in NC get “D&C’s” when abortions were illegal from a doctor who supported abortion rights. I know what happened to women who got coat-hanger abortions and it was not pretty. If they lived, they were usually left sterile, but in many instances women bled to death. Now if women are just breeding cattle, as the GOP and their fanatics seem to think, then it would not matter I suppose, but women are the other half of Creation and so it does matter. Women are the mothers of this world, and without them, the idiots who are trying to turn them into breeding stock would not be here. That women support these atrocities is unbelievable, but they do and one wonders how many of these so-called Christian wives use birth control - since I do not see many Quiver-full wives among the Congressional caucus, and I wonder how many of them would support their husbands taking concubines so that they could produce as many “soldiers for Christ” as they could, instead of turning a blind eye to all the abortions performed on Congressional mistresses and daughters.
The hate towards women by the GOP is not just hatred of a sex, but rather fear of them. Men in the GOP are collectively the most cowardly bunch of clowns I have ever lived to see in my lifetime. They live to hide behind their fear of women and all need serious psychiatric counseling right along with the crazies like Bachmann. Unfortunately for the rest of the country, the fear engendered in them by their mothers and by the women’s right movement during their teen years is now being acted out as a series of bills to reduce women to the same level as cattle - to be used and disposed of once their breeding years are past. How revolting that we have sunk to such a gutter life in this nation - one that even God who made woman to be the partner of man would find disgusting.
It won’t happen.
The GOP had SIX full years of White House, both houses of Congress, and an accomodating Supreme Court, and they did nothing. They might meddle, but no actions they seem to want will be put into law. They will run up against The Supreme Court, and some members will never give up the powerful election cudgel that has helped them for 30+ years.
If it does happen, maybe women will stop voting for Republicans, or even start bothering to show up to vote for their own lives. It really is up to those who choose to participate. If they don’t, I imagine getting used to forced births will take them awhile, if they live.
That is already happening!
I respect the author for trying to get more women to vote and these issues are important, but none of this will happen unless the Republicans get rid of the filibuster rules (not unthinkable), attach them to every bill (like the budget), and get Obama to go along (pretty sure he would shut down the gov’t over this). The one exception is probably the “any employer can opt-out of covering contraceptives/abortions as part of their health care policy” as that can be wrapped up in lot of other must-pass tweaks to Obamacare and covered by a workaround.
How did they plan to overcome a presidential veto, oh totally “serious” story?
