So I guess this is the part where Pelosi and Dem leadership tells the Left they stand more with a right-wing Israeli lobbying firm and its agenda than with liberal Muslim Americans.
This is why Trump will win in 2020.
āwe are against bigotry, we are against prejudice and against hate.ā
Hmm. Will Republicans vote no?
āI got an idea, why donāt we all just shoot each other in the face?ā
Media, really wanting to ramp up the Dems in dismay narrative again.
They donāt have to do that at all. And by the way, AIPAC, to which you refer, is not a lobbying firm.
(I donāt like AIPAC. I donāt like the current Israeli government. But what Omar said was not limited to AIPAC. And it wasāor was easily interpreted to beāan echo of the old anti-Semitic canard that Jews arenāt loyal. The same kind of thing used to be said of Catholics. It was used against Al Smith when he ran for president in 1928, and was a factor in his defeat. (The legend is that after the election, Smith sent the Pope a telegram: āUnpack.ā) And this isnāt the first time that Omar has trafficked in language used by anti-Semites. She did it a couple of weeks ago. So at the least she has a tin ear.)
Very bad move for the Dems to make a black Muslim the face of āhateā in America. Iām disgusted by this. At some pt if the Dems want to be the party that practices democracy, they have to stomach different perspectives, including on Israel. In other words, you cannot champion ādiversityā and refuse to allow it at the level of political analysis.
So I guess this is the part where Pelosi and Dem leadership walks way from the majority of the party and chooses to cast aside all chance of regaining the Senate and taking the WH. IOW my limited funds remain in my pocket.
āI know what intolerance looks like and Iām sensitive when someone says, āThe words you used Ilhan, are resemblance of intolerance.ā And I am cautious of that and I feel pained by that. But itās almost as if, every single time we say something regardless of what it is we sayā¦ we get to be labeled something. And that ends the discussion. Because we end up defending that and nobody ever gets to have the broader debate of what is happening with Palestine. So for me, I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is okay to push for allegiance to a foreign country,ā Rep. Omar.ā
Amend the resolution to say āAntisemitism is not anti-Zionism or criticism of the Israeli government,ā and Iām sure even Rep. Omar will vote for it.
This is why we canāt have nice things, like a sane and honorable President.
Make a decision, vote on it and move on.
I think youād want it the other way around: Anti-Zionism or criticism of the Israeli government is not anti-Semitism.
I do not believe any of the doom-and-gloom people and handwringers will be able to achieve The Rapture on this one.
I, for one, thank Trump, his Administration and his Crime Family (Ohā¦and a big Shout Out to Cummings, Waters, Schiff and Nadler who are going to town on them).
ETA also Mueller, SDNY and other LEOs
This isnāt about refusing to allow diversity. The tropes that she has repeated have been used not only to murder the 6 million Jews, but also to imprison Japanese and German Americans, exclude Catholics from neighborhoods and jobs, and other instances that I may be leaving out. I admire her previously professed willingness to learn but this accusation that oneās loyalty to the US is so easily suspect is an affront to diversity at a most fundamental level. It is no better that Trumpās allegation that an American Judge of Hispanic descent cannot be relied upon to judge fairly in cases related to Mexico.
Have the vote and be done with it. Then Pelosi needs to let Omar know that she needs to keep herself out of the news for a little while.
I must say, Iām dismayed at the level of vitriol being flung in these threads over the past few days.
Too many posters are talking past each other, attacking strawmen rather than what others actually say. Criticizing someoneās poor choice of words is not the same as attacking their right to question policy. (And itās certainly not attacking their religion.)
I havenāt heard anyone in the Democratic leadership (or even backbenchers) deny her right to express opposition to Israeli, Likud, or US policy and actions ā only her extremely ill-advised choice of words for doing that in this instance.
Yet, post after post vehemently attacks the illusory former.
The particular words she chose were age-old, well-known to people who lost entire families in the Shoah and centuries of pogroms before it. Dogwhistle is dogwhistle, even if it flies under the radar of those lucky enough not to be its target.
When youāre in a position of public trust, morally and politically, you need to choose your words wisely. We expect that of anyone who aspires to lead us. Rep. Omar is no exception; she simply chose poorly.
While I donāt believe Rep. Omar needs to self-censor, she does need to self-edit. She has to know by now every word is going to be scrutinized. There are ways to speak out against the current Israeli govt. and their lobbying here without sounding like a left wing Info Wars. This is not helping anyone, including herself,
To be fair, the resolution could also call for a rebuke of Israel for some of its most egregious abuses.
Iām starting to think our Muslim representative from Minnesota knows exactly what sheās doing and needs to choose her words more carefully. Either that, or put a sock in it.
I tend to agree. I donāt buy the āI was misinterpretedā line when it comes from the right and I donāt buy it now. If you have no command over your message like that you have no business running for office.
