When Southern Shitweasels, like Smith, expound on ā€œstates’ rights,ā€ they only mean the rights of the backward Southern states.

Lamar Smith (R-Oil) has the ā€œEnergy Companiesā€ dicks so far down his throat it is a wonder he can breath at all between that and their hands all the way up his ass.
He is nothing more than a meat-puppet doing his master’s bidding.

In other words…

ā€œGive me all your work product so I can share it with Exxon!!!ā€

This is his main concern? That his donors are being investigated for defrauding shareholders?
This is science? It really does appear to be outside the purview of the committee as it does not appear in their ā€˜charter’.

ā€œThese politically motivated actions undermine legitimate Congressional oversight authority and further diminish the reputation of the Science Committee.ā€

Feature, not a bug.

that targeted 17 state attorney generals

Attorneys general. They are attorneys of general purview. They are not ā€œgeneralsā€, no matter how much Republicans like to call them that to stoke their military fetish.

More like "House Science Committee Chair Lamar Smith (R-Exxon), amirite?

Yes, the Chairman is concerned that the AGs’ actions may encourage scientific research that further confirms the existence of man-made climate change due to fossil fuels, and those developments may have an effect on the Chairman’s friends and donors.

Here’s my favorite:

"…The Committee is concerned that the AGs’ actions may have an effect on our nation’s scientific research and development (R&D) in this area,ā€ committee spokeswoman Kristina Baum said in a statement.

Um, yeah, they may yield further proof of the reality of climate change and of the pernicious efforts of delusionally short-sighted right-wing corporatist lunatics like you to deceive the public about that reality. Calling Eric Blair…

@ghost: crap, you beat me to it…

I’m sorry, but in what universe does it make sense to make a scientifically illiterate ignoramus the Chair of the House Science Committee?

Man the oil companies are powerful. They have a congressional committee handling discovery in a state based action.

By the way, the states right’s argument will go a long way with the courts. Smith is probably going to lose this fight.

Exactly. I started saying after the election, when Eric Schneiderman was pushing back against the radical right wing agenda, that State’s Rights no longer means what the jackasses in the South think it means. (This Jackass is my congress creature. He is a fervent Christian Scientist who lost his first wife to an untreated urinary tract infection. Didn’t change his mind about science. I guess it is all just G*d’s plan.)

Get fracked, Lamar, and come back anytime you feel like you need another FU.

As ever it was, states’ rights only apply to hurting brown people. All else is exempt.

My former congressman (before I was gerrymandered out of his district as part of an ongoing attempt to defeat Lloyd Doggett). Really one of the dumbest guys in Congress. Unbelievable that he’s the science chair. Heaven help us all.
