Discussion: House Passes School Safety Bill In Wake Of Florida High School Shooting

Worth repeating. Window dressing is all this is.

WTF?

the first gun-related action by Congress since the shooting that left 17 dead at a Florida high school.

The bill authorizes $500 million over 10 years for grants to improve training and coordination between schools and local law enforcement and help identify signs of potential violence before they occur.

“Improve training and coordination” is “gun-related” in what way?!?!?

The threat at Parkland WAS identified. And once so identified one rapidly runs out of things one can actually DO. At a minimum we need temporary gun restraining orders, similar to restraining orders that keep someone away from partiucular persons or locations. Do both of those impinge on rights? Yes, but the second is well-established law and the first needs to be as well.

The bill authorizes $500 million over 10 years

Send the bill to the NRA.

Speaking of mental illness…

It’ll be an absolute joy watching Trump supporters try to square the idiot circle they’ve created for themselves:

  • On one hand, they call Cruz mentally ill, claiming no gun-control law could’ve prevented his violence.

  • On the other hand, they’ll soon demand he be held responsible for his actions – and executed.

The GOP can’t have it both ways.

But that won’t stop them from making fools of themselves trying…

(Spoiler Alert: Cruz doesn’t stand a chance in today’s Florida.)

Well, here on my campus, the coordination between school officials and law enforcement is confusing at best. We were issued an all clear via email, but are getting phone messages telling us to shelter in place. I’m in a safe building, but it sure doesn’t inspire confidence. (For $50,000 a year tuition, one would think they would have their act together on behalf of the students.)

That is awesome! Heard a bunch of kids interviewed on NPR and they did not disappoint. They are doing their homework and ready for the hard questions.

Hey, has anyone heard follow-up on the Southern (was it Georgia?) superintendent who threatened to expel any student who participated in a walkout?

Nothing will change until people stop voting Republican.

It’s that. fucking. simple.

Let us know when you’re safe, OK? It’s pretty upsetting to know that one of our little community here is going through that. Nobody should go through that but when it’s somebody you’re acquainted with the full madness of it crashes through. I guess I don’t have to tell you though. : (

We’re all okay. It turns out to have been a hoax. Someone called in a report to the local PD claiming there was a gunman at a graduate housing complex. That was, of course, relayed to the campus police and it took a long time to sort out that it wasn’t a real threat. It was most likely someone trying to counteract the positive publicity from the morning walk-outs by students to support gun regulation. I’m an older lady who has at least lived a life, seen my kids through college, etc. - but many students (who have long, full lives ahead of them) were understandably rattled. What is wrong with us as a country that we allow this to become a routine event?

I’ll take “Venal exploitation of irrational fear” for $500, Alex. Glad everyone’s OK and sorry for the scary times for everyone. A lot of great kids walked out of their schools today to say this is not acceptable. Maybe they can lead us out of this mess.
