We need a primer on the rules for impeachment-- both the congressional and legal stipulations and the horse-sense rules about how Congress works. This may very well “not be the time” to impeach, because this House would not at this time support impeachment. However, there is every reason in the world to impeach, and on its own merits apart from party discipline only the suborned would vote against it. What would be lost in a failed motion without party discipline? Do you in practical or legal terms only get one shot? It certainly is the right time to do everything we can to move towards impeachment. What can we do-- constructively?

I won’t argue with your point, that this vote makes the Democrats look weak, but… your premise is not entirely accurate.
In his writings Tommy Jefferson made it clear that he and his friends intended that a President could be impeached even for using his lawful powers in corrupt ways. He could, in fact, be impeached, and removed from office just for having fired James Comey, for example. As a practical matter, the House and the Senate lack the will to do that, (and, doing that would be a bad idea, I believe), but it is entirely within their power.

We don’t want to go into the midterms with impeachment in the news cycle. We need the public focused squarely on how poorly the Republican-dominated Congress is doing the work of the people. If we give them impeachment, the whole story becomes “Dems are still mad about Hillary losing.”
Eyes on the prize people. Even up or take both houses. Only then can we have any hope of impeaching this criminal. And his ill-gained Supreme Court justice.
