Capitol Police and the Architect of the Capitol investigated the issue determined that a malfunctioning electrical panel was the cause. There were no reports of smoke or fire, according to a Capitol Police statement. (Roll Call)

This would have blown over. If she’s leaving, the most likely reason is bad ratings. Second most likely would be that she’d already found another job.

While I’m on the topic:
I think the facepalming and mockery that greeted her “what’s wrong with blackface” stance isn’t what’s best for the country over the long term. Sure, I know that Kelly spent years at Fox and vigorously defended the whiteness of Santa Claus and Jesus. However, the question she raised is one held by a lot of very decent people who don’t want to be racist or be seen as racist. They see people like Kelly get jumped on for saying things that they themselves think or say, and it makes them defensive. It makes them think that minorities and liberals are demanding too much at best and are their enemies at worst. The treatment of Kelly makes them more receptive to the messages from white nationalists, IMO.

The Kelly whites need a calm explanation of the issue from someone they trust, someone that gives them credit for being fair people who oppose discrimination. Do whites “deserve” such treatment. No, but let’s keep the goal in mind here. Effective policy is informed by ideology, not dictated by it.

Really, the whole nation is overdue for modernization of our understanding of racism. I think that racism, for many whites, means slavery and segregation and deliberate, conscious acts of bias. The general public lacks understanding of how racism can be subconscious, how it can be subtly institutionalized, how constant exposure to subtle or minor racism can affect a person or community over the long term.

We are failing to make use of at least 50 years of science. Cognitive science is one of the hot fields. Behavorial economics has allowed huge increases in our abiity to model and understand economics. Behavioral investing is a vital tool to keep your survival-on-the-savanna instincts from steering you wrong in a world where the dangers are abstract and non-physical. It’s time to harness our improved understanding of behavioral decisions to help people identify and reduce their personal racial biases.

Racism is as natural as violence, and like violence, is something that we as a society and as individuals can either amplify or dampen. The rise of Trumpp suggests that we need better tools than we are using now to deal with racism.

Perhaps the general public lacks the capacity to understand. As Agent K said, “A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals.”

She is the host of a “major network” TV show… with a supposed history of investigative journalism and provocative reporting. All she had to do was Google the negative history of blackface before she embarrassed herself nationally. No Pity for stupid.
