Discussion for article #241599
Just get rid of it altogether. Or raise the limit to infinity. Otherwise we will repeat this same fiasco every year or so.
Another alternative is for people to wake up and stop voting for hostage takers.
peter king for gop speaker? only part time nuts. about all you can ask for.
Refusing to default on our debt and wreck the economy is what passes for “moderation” these days.
When the bagman for the IRA is the voice of “moderation”, you know that the House Republican caucus is truly a clusterfuck.
Notice how often the press is now making sure King’s described as moderate?
also suggested a willingness to work with Democrats to elect a new speaker.
The party that is unable to govern needs to give thanks (and offer their cliched thoughts and prayers) that the party that knows how to govern is willing to work with them.
Pete, you wanted the keys so bad, you keep 'em. We’re tired of getting the car out of the ditch.
this jackass is considered a moderate??/ ok compared to the f u b a r caucus … he just might be
That’s why I HATE this website…
Too much common sense!!
[It’s no FUN like TeaBaggLand

When did that bloviator become a moderate?
Or does the author leave out some words at the end, like moderate wife beater, or moderate a hole?
Well, they could go back to the way it was prior to the Republicans taking over during the Clinton Administration.
Just go back to using the Gephardt rule (which stated that any votes for spending bills were automatic votes to raise the debt ceiling).
Thank Mr. Gingrich for throwing that out as soon as they took control.
“Whatever we have to do to elect a speaker, we have to do,” King said. “Whatever we have to do to get it done.”
Careful what you wish for. The GOP could go along with the Freedom Caucus.
How far are we away from having some of the small handful of remaining GOP reps with some moderate thinking - say OK I’m switching? - while most of the prudent - thoughtful GOP reps have been chased out of office by the shrill lunatics - there may be some remaining who are nauseated.
The GOP is in a death spiral - it is engaged in this intense ideological distillation / self purification process - and what these imbeciles can’t grasp is that when you do an intense distillation of something - you end up with a very much smaller quantity than you started with. So go ahead turn up the crazy dial all the way beyond the top limit … then lets start seeing what percent of the general population is willing to admit to being on board .
amB(i)EN candidate doesn’t understand the significance of the debt ceiling in interview with Marketplace reporter
Ryssdal: All right, so let’s talk about debt then and the budget. As you know, Treasury Secretary Lew has come out in the last couple of days and said, “We’re gonna run out of money, we’re gonna run out of borrowing authority, on the fifth of November.” Should the Congress then and the president not raise the debt limit? Should we default on our debt?
Carson: Let me put it this way: if I were the president, I would not sign an increased budget. Absolutely would not do it. They would have to find a place to cut
My first thought as well, not being an economic suicide bomber doesn’t make one a moderate.
Quoting Mr King: "King also suggested a willingness to work with Democrats to elect a new speaker. “Whatever we have to do to elect a speaker, we have to do,” King said. “Whatever we have to do to get it done.”
Simple solution: Round up 30 Traditional Republicans and enter into a coalition deal with the Democrats, with Pelosi as Speaker, splitting the Committee Chairs between the Ds and the coalition Rs (Mr. King keeping his chairmanship), easily raising the debt limit, getting a big infrastructure bill quickly done and - to use magical Congressional vocabulary - getting back to the regular order, passing the Senate immigration bill.
The deafening noise you will hear, Mr. King, will be the American people rising from their Barca Loungers giving all of you a rousing standing ovation. This is the way to kill the Tea Party threat.
Social-structurally, the G.O.P. is still the “opposition party” to the Democrats.
That has extraordinary importance to the MSM. This is why Murdoch, Ailes, Talk Radio and the 0.001% steered the TeaNitwits to the continuation (and exacerbation) of the Southern Strategy–now expanded to include anti-Latino and other offshoots.
The Southern Strategy of an established Party: the Republican Party. Better than TeaNitwits being allied to the White Persons’ (Third) Party
Long ago, the so-called “moderate” Republicans could have resisted the TeaNitwit takeover.
But, to answer “why not”? it is instructive to look at the media, social-stratification and financial-reward-for- doofus mechanisms present in Today’s political discourse.
There is more money in being a TeaBagg Doofus as a 2015 Congressman or U.S. Senator than what Lowell Weicker or Jack Javits or Everett Dirksen EVER got for being a halfway-decent 20th Century Republican
Really, because to do otherwise is fraudulent (in common understanding, not legal terms).
What no one dares utter is the real truth: that the GOP “Establishment” has lost actual, real power over what they used to imagine was their territory–the whole US.
Sure, they would see the Democrats win a battle or two, a presidency here and there, but as Grover Norquist said, “We won’t let them govern.” And they didn’t. Look at Carter. Look at Bill, forced to deal with them and make compromises at every turn. Now look at Obama, who has actually stood his ground against them.
It is no longer the case that Democrats are not permitted to govern by the GOP Establishment. Consider states like California, with Democrats in charge–
So the ranting and raving of the supposedly radical right minority is actually what the GOP Establishment is feeling right now, deep down in its bones
King also suggested a willingness to work with Democrats to elect a new speaker.
“Whatever we have to do to elect a speaker, we have to do,” King said. “Whatever we have to do to get it done.”
Sounds like Peter King wants the job. And, as a Democrat, I’d support him if he buries the Hastert rule.
