Discussion for article #237622
“You really think Congress is just going to sit there while all the disastrous consequences ensue?” Scalia asked.
Well, now we know the answer.
If the supreme court decides to throw away all sense and precedent to support destroy the ACA, let republicans get what they want: Chaos.
No, your states don’t get free cash as a bonus, which would likely just go to fill in your budget holes from your tax giveaways regardless. We’ll go by what you’re asserting that the intent of the law was, so if you don’t set up an exchange in your state, you don’t get the subsidy cash.
Of course, the other requirements of the law remain, so your insurance companies have to take anyone, regardless of pre-existing conditions, and they can’t charge for that. So, since the mandate penalties are really small, rational behavior would have your citizens waiting until they have a really expensive medical condition to get insurance, and as such it should be interesting to watch the implosion of insurance providers in your states.
“Under the tentative House GOP proposal, states could design their own plans for funneling federal health dollars to residents and drop the health law’s consumer protections…”
Translation–states will design their own plans for funneling federal health dollars to companies that contribute to state politicians’ campaigns.
GOP Alternative to Obamacare: “If you like your cancer, you’ll be able to keep it.”
I’ve been following the debate at TPM and other sites about which party will catch electoral Hell if the S. Court does away with Federal exchange’s subsidies. While I think that both sides of the debate have made good points, the Republican Plan described above tells us who the Republican leadership thinks is going to get electorally whomped. And it’s not the Democrats! By keeping the subsidies through the 2016 elections, the Republicans have concluded that they will be the “whompees”-- clobbered electorally if millions of people go to the polls having lost their premium assistance. I assume that Democratic leaders have figured out the same thing. But, as always, I also assume that the Obama Administration will not be able to put together an effective political/public plan to make the Republicans gag on their Court victory. Oh, how I pine for a return of Clinton War Room politics.
