Discussion: House Dems Torn Over Benghazi Panel: Boycott Or Participate?

Discussion for article #222609

its simple-BOYCOTT.

If not send 1 super sharp representative to check or assist witnesses like the rep. from the Northeast recommended.

I’m against the whole idea of a boycott.

Trey Gowdy is treating this committee as a trial, which means he’s a prosecutor in search of a conviction. The witnesses need an adequate defense, and it would be a great disservice for them to be harassed by the 7 Republicans without Democrats defending them.

Nancy should pick 5 of the sharpest Democrats and make the Republicans look bad. Use their own political game against them, a boycott would play into the Republican game of “Democrats have even MORE to hide.”

Grow a pair and boycott the fucking thing. IT"S A SETUP! YOU CAN"T WIN! Don’t play.

if the Dem reps participating will get an equal amount of time to any Republicans to ask questions, then they should be there. If it will be run like an Issa committee where they will be told to shut up and the hearing shut down when they try to speak, they should boycott.

Either way, though, the proper resonse would be for Harry Reid to set up a Senate special committee to do the same thing–with a majority of Dems, of course–so that they can also file a report.

OR, that would force a compromise of having a single joint committee with an equal number of Dems and Republicans, from both House and Senate.

I’m inclined to agree with you but if the rules are that the majority can issue subpoenas without consulting the minority, exclude minority staff from witness interviews, and deny equal access to witnesses then they may as well boycott.

ETA: Under those terms it’s not an investigation, it’s a Russian style show trial.

Dem participation will not in any shape or form change the outcome, which has already been determined. So, why participate?

Just send one person to collect information and respond as needed

I agree but this is one big fucking travesty. I am almost convinced the repukes will end up looking like the kangaroo court and I still believe the Dems will come out on top on this one.

This should be a no brainer, and it should have been decided when they first rejected the even split panel, if not when they first announced the “Special Double Top Secret Select Committee”, And that would be to tell Boehner to pound sand and have a good time making yourselves look stupid and wasteful of the publics tax money. And then the Dems could have a little Popcorn session after each days proceedings and critique teh stupid with the news media, I’m sure Pelosi could scrounge up some press coverage, and just rip the GOP with the same points over and over, that this is bogus, wasteful, has been refuted time and time again and they need to move on to real work.

Sigh.

Democrats should actively protest, not just boycott. They should find a way to get a camera on them standing outside the door protesting the event, and they should take turns manning that microphone.

One way or another, every day the Republicans spend our tax money on their transparent, hail-mary “Hillary cure,” they waste one more day they could be actually leading the free world.

They represent what should be one of the highest, most meaningful and historic callings in the entire scope of human endeavor.

But instead, like dogs, they are rolling in their own pile of crap. And clearly they love the smell of it.

Show up with all the coverage from the early days of the Benghazi attacks on a laptop, set it in front of the microphone, turn it on full blast before anyone is called and stand there and tell the GOP that there’s all their evidence now they can either shut the eff up or explain to the American people why they are wasting millions of dollars that could be used to fix the Veterans Affairs system.

Sounds like another Issa committee to me. BOYCOTT. Why is this so hard for the Dems to understand. Repugs play by their own rules. Do not give this committee any credibility. Again Boycott!!!

I doubt most of the MSM is at all interested in this farce. Of course, we have Faux News, which barely discusses anything else these days. It must be getting boring for even their audience.

If the dems don’t show up, it will really be a non-starter. And America will continue to move on to “more important” issues. (heh)

No, to approach it as a trial needing a defense is to play in the GOP’s sandbox, and the Dems need to stop doing that. THere is nothing to gain by legitimizing, no matter how small that might be, the Gop’s efforts.

Stand like grown-ups around their playpen and pity them their tantrums seems like a much better approach to me.

This is a no-brainer.

The Democrats should appoint exactly ONE representative to the committee – to maintain access.

No more than one!

can that one take a camera in with them? Just askin’…

13 hearings have already been convened by Congress on this bullsh*t Rightie WooWoo fantasy-scandal. But thirteen is an unlucky number. Also it could become the new motto for this Congress that can’t get anything right:

14th Time’s the Charm !
Next…Time for the 200th vote to repeal Obamacare.
Ahhh…our tax dollars at work.

All the prior GOPig’s loony investigations were dog and pony shows. This one adds a Keystone Cop & Clown along with the dog and pony.

Democrats should send 5 copies of the Senate Report on Benghazi – one for each empty chair – and tell the GOPigs to shovem’ where the sun don’t shine.
